My Professional and Academic Goals Aligned with Walden University’s Vision and Mission

Walden University’s vision, mission, goals, and commitment to social change align closely with my personal aspirations in both my academic and professional pursuits. One of the university’s objectives, as outlined in its introduction, is “to offer innovative, student-centered educational programs that acknowledge and integrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities students bring into their academic journeys” (Walden University, 2022 b, para. 3). As an individual pursuing a Post Masters Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certificate, this approach not only motivates me but also encourages all students to effectively apply our skills and experiences in the academic setting. Walden University’s emphasis on fostering creativity, decision-making, and problem-solving is vital for me as I aim to evolve into a scholar-practitioner in the field of mental health care. These qualities are essential for anyone working in nursing practice and are particularly relevant as I work toward providing high-quality mental health care to underserved populations.

Nurses have a significant role in driving social change in both healthcare and society. According to Walden University (2022 b), social change is defined as “a deliberate process of generating and implementing ideas, strategies, and actions to enhance the value, dignity, and progress of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies” (para. 4). In my career as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP), I can contribute to social change in nursing by introducing innovative approaches to mental health disorders and promoting health care strategies that address the needs of diverse populations. By engaging in this process, I can help enhance the overall health and dignity of individuals, particularly in community health settings, and work to improve the mental health outcomes for those in need.

Aligning My MSN Program with My Mental Health Goals

The goals of Walden University’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program directly align with my professional and academic goals. The program outcomes state that students will be equipped to “assess the health needs of diverse populations for essential teaching and coaching functions based on specialized nursing knowledge to restore and promote health and prevent illness/injury” (Walden University, 2022a). This outcome resonates with my ambition to specialize in mental health care. Specifically, I intend to assess and address mental health disorders within my community by focusing on the needs of underserved populations. My goal is to help create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking care for mental health disorders. I plan to apply evidence-based practice to evaluate and promote mental health in these communities, using clinical competencies to offer effective treatments and interventions.

I also recognize the importance of conducting a thorough health needs assessment to identify specific gaps in mental health care and services for underserved populations. By leveraging my training in nursing education, I can educate others in my community on recognizing the signs of mental health disorders and provide resources for appropriate care. This is vital not only for improving individual outcomes but also for promoting broader social change in healthcare systems.Networking opportunities in Nursing

Significance of Networking

As I work toward my goal of becoming a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP), networking for mental health care providers will be a key strategy for professional growth. Building connections with other practitioners, particularly those with experience in working with underserved populations, will help me gain valuable insights and strengthen my understanding of the unique needs within these communities. Schmidt (n.d.) points out that “nurses can establish connections with individuals working in their desired fields or roales with the intention of gaining knowledge” (para. 15). By engaging in networking opportunities, I can further refine my nursing skills and enhance my clinical practice.

Connecting with other professionals will also provide me with opportunities to share resources and collaborate on initiatives that focus on mental health care and social change in healthcare. This networking can help me develop new clinical competencies and gain proficiency in areas of nursing practice that may be outside my current expertise, allowing me to provide more comprehensive care to those in need. By working together, we can foster a community of nurses for social change and ensure that more people—especially those from diverse populations—receive the mental health care they need.

In conclusion, Walden University’s commitment to social change and its focus on integrating innovative ideas and strategies align perfectly with my professional and academic goals as an aspiring Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Through this program, I am confident that I will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to assess and address the mental health needs of underserved populations, while promoting health care strategies that support social change in nursing and contribute to the well-being of diverse communities.

        Hello Claire,

I really feel like your focus on mental health in underserved communities is so important and is so needed in many communities. Most people do not have proper access to mental health and networking can really help you open up more avenues to get people access. Maybe by networking with psychiatrists or public health nurses, you would be able to open up more resources for yourself and ways to help those in need of mental health resources. As nurse practitioners, we need to be able to collaborate with different specialties and career fields to ensure we are giving the best quality of care to all of our patients. The second point you mentioned about being treated without fear or judgment is also so vital, I feel like so many people are afraid to get the care they need as they may be judged or seen differently. Thanks so much for sharing and good luck!

Hi Claire. I am also in the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP) program. I am very excited. There is a great need for MHNP right now and I am beyond excited for this new role.  Per The Harvard Gazette (2022), mental health is on the rise since the pandemic (Para 4). That doesn’t surprise me.  A report published by the United States Department of Health and Human Services states projects that by 2025 there will be a shortage of mental health professionals of about 250,000 (Robinson, 2021). That is a very large number.

        Week 1 Response 2

Hi Claire, I commend you for identifying a need and the willingness to return and work to obtain your post-master certification in that area of need. It’s incredible the difference in healthcare and what is taken for granted as we take a closer look into our backyard and identify those many areas of need in underserved communities. It is a great decision to take the path less traveled and focus on underserved, rural, or low-income communities. Especially in mental health, these areas often slip through the cracks of our healthcare system. Minority Nurse offers several tips for working in underserved communities, some of which include: understanding the culture, building strong patient relationships, providing judgment-free care, gaining mental health experience, and practicing self-care (2017).

I agree with your statement that the world of healthcare is constantly evolving. Thus, we, in part, must stay abreast of modern research and groundbreaking technology and navigate the plethora of information available at our fingertips. One of the program outcome objectives for the Master of Science (MSN) is to ensure that we can “critique evidence-based literature drawing from diverse theoretical perspectives and pertinent research to guide decision making that demonstrates best practices” (Walden University, 2022). Claire, Thanks again for sharing. I enjoyed reading your post.

        Hello Claire,

Your discussion was concise and well-written. The point that resonated with me was that as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, networking with other healthcare professionals is essential in providing effective mental health care to underserved populations. According to Lake and Turner (2017), one of the objectives of the Mental Health Action Plan is to provide integrated mental health and social services in healthcare organizations. To achieve this objective, networking with other healthcare professionals such as social workers, community health nurses, and psychiatrists is essential. Networking can improve knowledge-sharing and sharing of experiences and expertise to address mental health issues among patients.

Introduction

Hello, I’m Sarah Jacobs, and I’ve been a nurse for nearly 12 years. Finally, I’ve reached a point in my life where pursuing my Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree is a possibility. I work as a travel nurse in the Vanderbilt ER in Nashville, TN, and I’m a mother to two teenagers. My son is 16, and my daughter is almost 18. I enjoy the outdoors and cherish lazy days too. An interesting tidbit about me is that I co-host a podcast called “Rate Your Pain” with a dear friend from New Zealand. I’m excited about this next chapter in my life, and I look forward to how this new journey will align with my passion for health promotion, clinical practice, and nursing leadership.

Walden University’s Mission, Vision, and Goals Aligned with My Academic and Professional Goals

Walden University became my school of choice after researching institutions that would consider applicants with a lower GPA. While it’s not something I’m proud of, I did what was necessary to support my family and earn my two degrees. When I read the mission statement, which emphasizes “providing a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners” (Walden University, 2022), I felt it perfectly suited my situation. I thought, “This is my chance!” It’s my opportunity to prove that I can transform and contribute to positive social change.

My goal is to obtain my Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree and work in telehealth. The area I live in is mostly rural, and I want to extend healthcare and nursing education to those who can’t easily reach a doctor’s office. Home visits would be part of this too, especially for patients who face socioeconomic barriers to accessing healthcare. I believe this would greatly benefit my community, allowing me to improve community health by addressing health disparities and promoting healthcare access for underserved populations. Walden’s mission to promote social change and healthcare perfectly aligns with my vision of making a difference in rural healthcare. Additionally, Walden University’s commitment to fostering nursing practice and nursing leadership resonates with my desire to grow both professionally and personally.

In the future, I may consider returning to emergency medicine within a hospital setting, as it’s my passion. Walden’s vision mentions advancing the greater global good (Walden University, 2022). I believe that having more highly educated healthcare professionals, especially in underserved areas, is a key component of advancing the global good. By furthering my education through Walden’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program, I will be able to contribute more meaningfully to my community’s healthcare needs, bridging the gaps in mental health care, clinical competencies, and patient advocacy.

MSN Program Outcomes in Relation to My Academic and Professional Goals

The outcomes of Walden University’s MSN program are directly aligned with my academic and professional goals. This program will allow me to advance my career, transitioning from my BSN degree as a registered nurse to my future role as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). As I progress in my studies, I will gain the ability to assess the health needs of diverse populations, offering a broader spectrum of care compared to my current role. My goal is to shift from following orders to offering more comprehensive care as an advanced practitioner. This includes conducting health needs assessments, delivering health promotion initiatives, and enhancing clinical practice with evidence-based approaches to care.

I aim to use my new nursing skills as an FNP to create a lasting impact in my community, focusing on patient advocacy and healthcare accessibility. By working in telehealth, I will be able to extend healthcare services to underserved populations in rural areas who often face barriers to accessing traditional in-person care. Whether it’s pediatrics, geriatrics, or addressing chronic conditions, the knowledge gained through the MSN program will allow me to provide holistic and comprehensive care to individuals across the lifespan.

The Significance of Networking

I never really considered social media or professional colleague relationships as networking, but after further reflection and reading articles like those on Nurse.org, I can see how these connections have indeed been part of my journey. I’ve followed groups on Facebook and Instagram related to travel nursing, career success, and nursing leadership. These groups have been an excellent source of information and support, and I now realize that this type of engagement is a crucial aspect of professional networking.

I’ve also learned about the power of social networking platforms like LinkedIn. Having a LinkedIn account has been valuable in my job search, as I could easily find and apply to nursing jobs. Additionally, I discovered through Nurse.org that carrying a tangible business card with relevant details like my specialty, certifications, degrees, and links to my LinkedIn profile can make a significant difference in making myself visible for career opportunities (Walker, 2018). These small actions, such as recommending colleagues for positions or joining professional groups, have all been part of my networking journey, even if I hadn’t labeled them as such before.

As I pursue my Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree, I intend to expand my network and connect with other healthcare providers in telehealth and rural healthcare. Networking with other nurses, especially those in similar fields, will allow me to gain insights into how best to serve underserved populations in rural areas. I also hope to use my expanded knowledge to help advocate for healthcare access and build professional relationships that allow me to offer healthcare education and improve mental health care for a diverse range of patients.

By strengthening my network and building these professional relationships, I can better support the healthcare needs of my community, particularly in telehealth, where access to care is often limited. This networking will help me create new opportunities for myself as I transition from my current nursing practice into my role as an FNP, empowering me to help provide more accessible care for all age groups, from pediatrics to geriatrics, especially for those facing challenges in accessing quality care.

In summary, Walden University’s focus on social change, nursing leadership, and providing opportunities for professional growth strongly aligns with my goal of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). Through the program’s commitment to evidence-based practice, healthcare innovation, and community health, I am excited to contribute to social change in healthcare and improve access to care in my rural community.

Great question. I’m paraphrasing, but to me being a scholared-practitioner is someone reaching professional excellence by being motivated by personal goals. I am completely driven by personal goals. Those being my children and my desire to be more. I’m continuing my education and plan to be dedicated to my studies in order to increase my knowledge and obtain my masters degree. I’ve managed my time and will continue to do so and stay organized. That, in my opinion, is also part of becoming a scholar.

Hi Sarah! I think that is great that you are interested in helping the community who don’t always have access to come in for office visits but yet still need a provider at home. I experienced this a lot in home health where patients would benefit greatly from having a visiting practitioner. It was either too tasking to get to a medical facility or they had fragile health or it was too much of a risk medically to go by themselves. Everyone has a different situation. Seeing patients in a home setting is also very eye opening and I think as a clinician it gives you the opportunity to see how these patients live and what their situation is really like.

I am excited about going back to school for my MSN as well and I look forward to sharing experiences and learning new things with you and everyone else. Best Wishes ?

      Welcome Sara!

I’m glad that you are able to focus in your career of becoming an FNP! I know what it’s like to have to juggle life, work and family and a lot of times we put ourselves off for others. I am working on obtaining my degree in adult-gerontology acute care focusing on areas such as the urgent care, emergency room, and inpatient hospitals. As I read through the other students introduction majority of them are specializing in mental health, so I feel alone out here.

Networking has awarded the opportunity for individuals to get bedside others or in rooms that they would have normally not been able to enter. Healthcare professionals also have to be aware of how they network to avoid any breech in HIPAA or disclosure of confidential information. A study conducted showed that 23% percent of nurses who utilized social media for networking purposes were familiar with their institution’s social media policy, whereas 69% were “somewhat familiar” or had “heard of the policy,” and 9% reported no familiarity. (Lefebvre, et al., 2020).

Joining an nursing organization is also a great way to network outside of using social media. A nursing membership can help fulfill professional and personal goals. Organizations like The American Nursing Academy offers opportunities for nurses to obtain resources on current practices to gain competence and growth. For those NP students who are going into a specialty area such as mental health they can obtain certifications or CEUs (Echevarria, 2018).

      Hello Sarah,

Networking is an important aspect in professional development. Your discussion has been illustrative on how networking is undertaken including the professionals that a nurse can collaborate with. It has impacted on my understanding of how networking works in healthcare. I initially only regarded networking that occurs in professional spaces such as hospitals where the nurse collaborates with the professionals such as doctors to deliver care to the patients (Haruta & Tsugawa, 2021). In these areas, the nurse can also work as part of the healthcare teams to achieve the team goals in providing patient care. You have however brought out the aspect that the networking can happen in the social media spaces. Although Pianese & Belfiore (2021) agrees with you on the role of social media in professional networking, there is a challenge with misinformation, fake accounts, and security issues over the social media platforms. I personally would like to network with the PACU healthcare team that is composed of surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and anasthetists.

      Hello Sarah,

Your discussion was concise and well-written. The point that stood out for me was that your goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and serve rural areas while also working in telehealth. Family Nurse Practitioners are effectively trained to serve diverse populations, including rural ones. Using telehealth could help reach more people in rural areas and address barriers that could prevent them from accessing care such as transport problems and healthcare facilities being too far from households. According to Gajarawala and Pelkowski (2021), telehealth offers various benefits, such as improving patient satisfaction, providing quality care, and minimizing healthcare costs.

      Response to Sarah

Hello Sarah, thank you for contributing to this module’s discussion. I like how you have organized your discussion into different sub-sections. I love that you introduced yourself, which gives a picture of what kind of person you are. You have then proceeded to explain how Walden’s mission and vision and the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. I like that you have taken the time to research and become aware of Walden University and found that it suits your situation perfectly. I am also intrigued by the university’s mission which accommodates diversity. I like that you have identified the gaps in your community and are ready to obtain your FNP degree and provide healthcare and education to the community. Being an FNP will allow you to render family-focused care to the people in your community across the lifespan (Kraus & DuBois, 2017). You mentioned that you enjoy home visits, and being a family nurse practitioner will suit you since it entails rendering services to the people at their homes.

Lastly, you have discussed how MSN program outcomes are related to your academic and professional goals. I like that you have appreciated that the MSN will permit you to advance to a Nurse practitioner. I agree with your statement; as an NP, you can offer more services than a registered nurse. You have concluded the discussion by explaining the importance of networking and how it can help you achieve your academic and professional goals. I appreciate that you have identified the platforms that work best for you as networking, like reading on Nurse.org, groups that talk about travel nursing, and creating a LinkedIn account. Besides, networking is essential since it helps an individual to develop and enhance their skill set, remain on top of the current trends in nursing, keep a pulse on the job market, meet prospective mentors and partners, and gain contact with the essential resources that will foster your nursing advancement (Manca & Ranieri, 2017).

My Professional and Academic Goals Along with Walden University’s Vision and Mission

After 15 plus years of nursing experience in an ever-changing world, I’ve seen firsthand that the need for mental health services is at an all-time high. The effects of COVID-19 have only magnified this need, particularly with a dramatic increase in anxiety among patients. This issue has been challenging for me, as I have limited background or knowledge in mental health care. I feel a strong desire to be part of the solution, and that’s what led me to shift my focus. Initially, I had intended to advance my career in Family Health, but one of my biggest frustrations was the growing mental health struggles faced by many of my patients. This led me to change my major to Mental Health Nursing, so that I can better understand the complex needs of those I serve and provide effective care for individuals dealing with mental health disorders.

Walden University: A Perfect Fit for My Academic and Professional Goals

I was almost set to start at another university, but after researching Walden University, I realized that it offered exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate how user-friendly everything has been so far, from the easy setup of the courses to the availability of helpful staff for any questions I have. The online nursing program at Walden has been a perfect fit for my schedule and learning style, especially as I balance work and family life. Walden’s online learning format has allowed me to continue my education without the barriers that traditional programs might present.

I was drawn to Walden’s commitment to social change in nursing, and it aligns with my own goals. According to Walden University (2022b), “Positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions” (Para. 4). I believe that as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I can be part of that change by improving mental health care and fostering health promotion in my community. By understanding mental health disorders and offering comprehensive mental health care to underserved populations, I will be able to make a meaningful impact.

Walden University (2022b) also emphasizes that “quality and integrity are the cornerstones of all academic processes” (Para. 7), which is something I highly value. I want to be a solid nurse practitioner upon graduation and know that I am fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of this role. The depth of knowledge and the focus on evidence-based practice in Walden’s program is exactly what I need to provide the highest quality of care to those struggling with mental health issues.

MSN Program Outcomes in Relation to My Academic and Professional Goals

The MSN program at Walden University will help me achieve my professional goals by transitioning me from a registered nurse with a general focus to a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP). This advanced practice role will allow me to gain a more comprehensive understanding of mental health care, particularly how to address mental health disorders such as anxiety, which I have seen become more prevalent among my patients post-COVID.

I am particularly drawn to Walden’s focus on evidence-based practice and clinical competencies, which are critical for providing the best possible care in mental health nursing. I want to be prepared not just to provide care, but to advocate for my patients and use research to guide treatment decisions. I aim to be well-equipped to manage both the clinical and psychological aspects of mental health care and support social change in healthcare by improving the accessibility of services for underserved populations.

As a future Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP), I plan to work closely with individuals to help them overcome mental health disorders and offer both immediate care and long-term solutions for improved mental well-being. With Walden’s focus on nursing leadership, I am confident that I will be equipped to take on this important role and make a real difference in the lives of my patients.Tips for Networking in Nursing

    Importance of Networking

Professional networking is incredibly important for nurses, especially in today’s evolving healthcare landscape. It offers numerous benefits: finding new job opportunities, staying informed about changes within the profession, and maintaining connections with current and past employers who could serve as references in future roles. Networking also opens up unexpected opportunities and serves as a support system, allowing nurses to build relationships with colleagues and mentors who can provide valuable guidance.

Schmidt (n.d.) highlights that job dissatisfaction is a major indicator of nurse burnout (Para 23). By engaging in professional networking, I can stay connected with others in the field, share experiences, and find support during challenging times. Networking for mental health care providers—whether through conferences, online communities, or professional groups—can also help me stay up-to-date with the latest research and trends in mental health nursing. This will allow me to continually improve my skills and provide better care for my patients. Connecting with other Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (MHNPs) and nursing professionals will also give me the opportunity to share ideas and learn from those with more experience in the field, ultimately improving my ability to address mental health issues in my community.

I have already started to build my network by following professional groups on social media, joining online forums for nurses, and engaging in discussions about mental health care. These platforms provide not just information, but also a sense of solidarity and support from others who understand the unique challenges of working in mental health care.

As I continue to grow in my career, I plan to expand my professional network further, both to find new opportunities and to stay connected with colleagues who share my passion for improving mental health care. I believe that strong professional relationships will play a key role in my success as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP) and will support my goal of becoming a leader in mental health care who advocates for social change in the field.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, Walden University’s mission to promote social change in nursing and commitment to providing a comprehensive, evidence-based education aligns perfectly with my professional aspirations. The MSN program will not only help me gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MHNP) but will also prepare me to advocate for mental health care, patient advocacy, and health promotion within my community. With Walden’s nursing leadership development and emphasis on social change, I am confident that I will be well-equipped to make a positive difference in the lives of those dealing with mental health disorders and to contribute to improving health care for underserved populations.

Absolutely! I have been able to meet new people in my class and see where they all work and live. I love that we are from all over the US. That is much different than what I am used to with the state college. Everyone has so much to offer with different experiences and stories and we are all getting exposed to that. This is a much different learning opportunity than what I am typically used to.

Hi Cindy,  As we are reeling back from the reality’s of Covid 19 and post Covid 19 conditions, it is a great moment of reflection for some, and many professionals are making decisions that will affect their paths moving forward. I, like you, noticed so many in need and facing mental health challenges and can understand taking a leap in a new direction. In my community, the need for mental health practitioners are at an all time high. I’m looking forward to completing the program and learning how to care for this population. As you cited in your post, Walden University (2022b) states that “positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions” (para.4).” I too am a firm believer that all change must begin from within and am eager for the vast information that will be included in this course. Although many find it tough, I agree that as nurses we must use our network to its fullest. As some may be timid and other more lively, strengths from both can help a fellow nurse through professional networking.

Hi, Cindy! I can relate to each point made in your post. I too am in the PMHNP certificate program. I was initially planning on attending another college as well, to be able to have access close to home. However, from my initial interaction and on, everyone that I have worked with at Walden has been extremely helpful and kind. The entire process was streamlined and expeditious. The mission and vision of the college and the school of nursing align perfectly with my personal mission, vision, and goals. It is my goal to be able to make a positive difference in the communities around me in the hope that that difference will branch out further from there. Not only is it in the mission and vision statements of the university and college of nursing, but it is evident through action that those statements are not just words in print. The mission and vision of Walden University (2022) and the College of Nursing (2022) are to prepare us to go out and make a positive impact globally and I’m excited to finally be on my way to doing just that in a specialty that I am passionate about.

I noticed an increase in anxiety after covid also. I live in an area where the population sores in the wintertime with a seasonal population. We are seeing a lot of people coming in that should have probably come in a lot sooner but were too afraid due to covid. Now their situations are even worse and their anxiety about being in the hospital is also affecting their outcomes.

My Professional and Academic Goals Along with Walden University’s Vision and Mission

Walden University offers an opportunity for diverse career professionals to transform into scholar-practitioners and contribute to positive social change. One of my key goals is to help those who are most vulnerable, particularly individuals with mental health issues who may not be able to advocate for themselves. This is a significant reason why I have chosen Walden University to pursue a career as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Walden University stands out by providing innovative, learner-centered educational programs that recognize and leverage the knowledge, skills, and abilities that students bring to their academic journeys. The abundant resources and supportive environment at Walden University make it an excellent choice for achieving success in your career.

MSN Program Outcomes in Relation to my Professional and Academic Goals

Walden University prioritizes quality and integrity in all academic processes and values innovation and flexibility in delivering educational programs. The university believes in diverse academic routes to achieve excellence and integrity.

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program aims to equip students with the ability to assess the health needs of diverse populations and provide necessary teaching and coaching based on specialized nursing knowledge. This empowers professionals to restore and promote health while preventing illness and injury. My professional goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people, particularly those dealing with mental health issues, and to help them find happiness and acceptance within their communities, free from fear and discrimination.

The Importance of Networking

Networking holds immense importance because it allows professionals to establish connections that are beneficial to everyone involved. Networking contributes to building a better reputation, increased visibility, a stronger support network, improved business growth, and the creation of more impactful connections. Networking facilitates the development of a collaborative community, making it easier for individuals to connect with one another and work together effectively.

Introduction

Hello, I’m Zheman, and I’ve been a registered nurse for four years. For the past two years, I’ve been working in the critical care unit, specializing in caring for the elderly. Nursing can be physically and mentally demanding, but my passion for patient care keeps me motivated. I’ve decided to further my knowledge and skills as a healthcare professional, which is why I’ve chosen Walden University. I’m pursuing the AGACNP program to earn my MSN.

Walden University’s Mission, Vision, and Goals and my Academic and Professional Goals

Walden University stands out as the ideal choice for anyone in the nursing field. I believe that for individuals seeking to acquire knowledge and develop competencies that will enable them to make a positive impact in the nursing profession, Walden University should be their top choice. This institution envisions a unique 21st-century learning community where knowledge is not only valued but also applied to address critical societal challenges (Walden University, n.d.). As a healthcare professional, my role extends beyond providing care in a healthcare setting to making meaningful contributions to society. My interest in driving positive change aligns with the university’s vision of producing graduates who can address global health and community issues.

Additionally, I firmly believe that positive change is the key to resolving many social problems. As a healthcare professional, interacting with diverse individuals presents an opportunity to challenge and expand one’s perspectives. At Walden University, I will have the chance to connect with others in the profession who can help me grow and advance, enabling me to make positive changes in my area of practice.

Importance of Networking

Networking holds immense value for healthcare professionals, offering opportunities for career advancement, staying updated on industry trends, and finding valuable support (Schmidt, n.d.). My professional goal is to progress in my nursing career, particularly working with elderly patients facing acute crises, while also taking on greater responsibilities. Walden University provides programs that employ diverse learning approaches, ensuring quality outcomes and opportunities to network with professionals in the field. I look forward to cultivating a scholarly mindset and honing my research skills, enabling me to engage in evidence-based practices, a cornerstone of the nursing profession.

I am hopeful that Walden will give me the tools to help make social change a priority after I graduate. Taking the core courses will definitely help. One example of implementing social change in my future practice would be to advocate more for uneducated individuals. English is my second language, as well as my parents, and I saw firsthand the struggle for my parents when they had to attend their healthcare appointments. I plan to volunteer within my community to educate those struggling with the English language.

For the past 10 years, I have had the privilege to work as a pediatric nurse in multiple settings. As I was at my desk one day, I realized I had more to offer the pediatric population. I could gain the knowledge that I would learn at Walden University to help those in need. I want to transfer myself into a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner because children do not need to wait for help. They need the best care right now to become productive, thriving, and positive adults. I want to provide “positive social change” to children who are struggling with just being a child in an adult world (Walden University, 2022). These children need to explore their feelings and validate their emotions which speaks to me in pursuing my advanced degree.

After many years of saying no to advancing my degree, I finally said yes. I have had 3 medical careers since graduating from high school. I have done a lot of distance learning, online learning, and personal study goals during the past 32 years. Walden’s “commitment to lifelong learning” positively influenced me to continue to strive for my advanced degree (Walden University, 2022). I want to provide a change in my community where I want children to see a mental health practitioner without waiting. I want to provide change to a society where mental health is a negative stigma. Being able to listen to parents’ concerns, interpret those concerns, and have empathy for those seeking care is important to me.

Networking can help you find the support needed when questions need to be answered, problems arise or just support is needed. Networking can help land the job you want and build those professional and personal relationships. Nursing has the best organizations to help with whatever you desire. Everyone must take a positive step forward to provide those relationships.

My Goals along with and Walden university vision and mission

I have been a nurse for 3 years. In these 3 years, my nursing career interests have shifted from med surge to long term care to traveling and most recently hospice. Having grown up in an environment that considered mental illness nothing more than a cry for attention, it sparked an interest in me to learn more about mental health, with the hope that it would help someone someday. Therefore, when this opportunity to advance my education and get my PMHNP came my way, I did not think twice.

Walden’s mission and vision is centered on the importance of giving professionals an opportunity to advance their education and make a positive change in society and thereby advancing the greater globe (Walden University, 2020). This statement speaks directly to what my goal is, which is to help make mental health resources much more accessible to every person regardless of social status, ethnicity, and level of education or background. I believe knowledge is power and when people are informed, they do better, therefore, making mental health knowledge easily accessible is the first step in making a difference.

Coming from a background that had very limited mental health resources, my professional goal is to be part of the efforts to bridge the mental health disparity gap through the knowledge I acquire here at Walden. I plan on working full time as a case manager while I complete my masters’ degree and hopefully set up my own mental health practice in the near future. Walden stood out to me due to its flexibility, easy admission process, quality of education and recommendations from previous master’s in nursing students.

The college of nursing aims at impacting nursing professionals with knowledge to allow them to make improvements in health outcomes and therefore advancing the greater good of global communities (Walden University, 2020). This resonates with me because I indeed hope to make a positive change in mental health on a global scale, using the knowledge and skills I attain from Walden. I Plan on working with my instructors and fellow students to help me attain my professional and academic goals. I also understand that Walden has a vast number of resources available to students to allow them to be successful, such as the office of academic support the class café, the Walden bot, which I have already made use of. The Walden website is also very easy to navigate, which is an added advantage.

    Importance of Networking

Having been a nurse for 3 years, I can certainly attest to the importance of networking, I learned early in nursing school how much of an impact social networking has on your career, from planning/finding preceptor placement, to finding a mentor that understood my learning needs to getting my first ever nursing job, networking played a major role in all these stages of my nursing career. Per the Bureau of labor statistics 70% of jobs are created through professional networking (Woffard, P. 2018). Therefore, making professional connections is very vital, not only in the nursing filed but the general professional field all together.

Jessie, I too have a limited exposure with mental health but do deal with it in the ER. Most of the time my exposure has not always been pleasant as there are lots of patients who come in when there are in a crisis.  I have been so intimidated by mental health patients in the past. I do not have the skill set for helping or managing patients with mental health issues. It causes me to fear the whole idea of it. I am completely interested in the human mind. I am always trying to figure out even my “normal” patients and why they sometimes have such peculiar or difficult behaviors. You see, at any given time we as nurses deal with all these different behaviors that cause us to become frustrated and sometimes they even make us want to walk away from a career that we spent years trying to develop. It is so vital that we have a deeper knowledge about behaviors and what they mean. I think it will help us become better nurses and not take things so personal. I want to better understand people, their minds, their behaviors, and even become helpful to those who suffer from more significant mental health issues. I am looking forward to this new career path that I have chosen.

My Professional and Academic Goals and How They Align with Walden University’s Vision and Mission

Walden University’s vision, mission, goals, and social change align with my academic and professional goals. The one statement that stood out to me was “To provide innovative, learner-centered educational programs that recognize and incorporate the knowledge, skills, and abilities students bring into their academic programs.” (Walden University, 2011 b) I feel like this is exactly what I was looking for in an online academic setting. I look forward to instructors imparting their knowledge, expertise, and experiences.

My Professional and Academic Goals as They Relate to the MSN Program

My goals at Walden are to learn about psychiatric mental health, graduate from the MSN Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program, and have the knowledge to pass the board certification after I graduate. My goals fit in well with the goals of both university as a whole and the college of nursing program at Walden University. I was looking for a program that was innovative and dedicated to excellence that would help me become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner that could better improve the health outcomes in our society.

    The Importance of Networking

Networking is very important in gaining employment and advancing in your healthcare career. “Both Yale University and Cornell University cite the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) when claiming that 70% of all jobs are found through networking.” (Schmidt 2018) networking is also important in gaining information on new jobs from current and recent employees about how employees are treated and compensated at their company. I hope that During the process of earning this new degree from Walden University I will be able to engage with my peers and increase my networking outside of my local area.

I have been a nurse since 2003 and have practiced in several different specialties ranging from bedside care, outpatient care and leadership. I am continuing my education journey here at Walden University with hopes of becoming an acute care gerontology nurse practitioner.

Networking is vital to increasing an individual’s professional development in order to explore other job opportunities, advance an individual’s career, or explore different career pathsAttending social events and subscribing to nursing organizations has awarded me the opportunity to meet individuals that I would not have normally met on my current journey or path. It allowed me to network with individuals that are either on the same or similar career path and individuals that could be used as a resource or reference.

  • Collapse SubdiscussionIeshia Lysania Stevens

    Introduction

My name is Ieshia Stevens. I have been a registered nurse for eight years now. I have spent most of my nursing profession working as a trauma critical care nurse. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I am nervous but excited to embark on this journey and welcome the challenges that lie ahead.

As a single mother of four amazing children, I am always on the go, whether it is work, school, extracurricular activities, or running errands; there is never an end to the list of things that need to be done. For years now, I have put off furthering my education and have even considered “settling” for another career path because I did not think that I would find a school that could cater to my needs. One of the major selling points for me was reading the testimonials of so many Walden graduates whose lives were a direct reflection of my own, and I found hope in their triumph.

Walden’s Vision, Mission Goals and Social change and My Professional/Academic Goals

Since its inception in 1970, Walden’s vision has always strived to provide a platform for working individuals to have access to advanced education through distance learning. This is an ongoing vision that has evolved throughout the years, and Walden has continued to strive to master and accommodate the needs of this student body. Walden has continued that vision by fostering social change through “empowering students to make a difference by confronting challenges where they live, in their profession, and on a global scale” (Walden University, n.d.). Walden has successfully created an online community that connects practitioners of higher education on a global platform.  Therefore, creating a learning environment that can realistically be incorporated into the life of the average working individual with life responsibilities.

The vision, mission, goal, and social change presented by Walden University all resonate with me and align with my professional and academic goals. Though I personally have never been able to relay them in those exact words, it conveys and aligns with the outcome of my ideal education and professional experience. My professional and academic goals include the marriage of knowledge obtained and skills acquired throughout this program, thus producing a well-rounded scholar-practitioner that can facilitate positive social change within my family, profession, and community. What stands out to me is the social change initiatives. As stated by Vision, Mission, and Goals (2022), “Walden supports positive social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society.” I feel as if this social change initiative is needed now more than ever. Walden University is so committed to social change that it has created an entire platform dedicated to just that, called the Center for Social Change. This platform is a “connective hub committed to empowering change-makers, building community, and elevating social change outcomes across the university” (Center for Social Change, 2022). That is what I call commitment to a cause.

MSN Program outcomes and My Professional and Academic Goals

I found that making a list of what I hope to gain by the end of the program and comparing it to Walden’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program outcome gave me a better understanding of how my goals aligned with the program outcomes. Looking at what is presented on the list of outcomes, I was able to highlight one that really stood out to me. “Implement specialist nursing roles to promote quality improvement of patient-centered care in accordance with professional practice standards that transform health outcomes for diverse populations” (MSN Outcomes, 2022). My goal is to understand further and gain the in-depth knowledge and skills each course offers.

    Networking

Networking is an important part of nursing. Throughout my nursing career, I have had to communicate with many disciplines across the board and advocate for patients daily. Unintentionally I have networked and built relationships and connections that have lasted. These connections have evolved over the years as these professionals have also evolved, advanced, transitioned, and changed. Networking is important because it provides the opportunity to help someone along the way and be helped along the way. It is an opportunity to be mentored by someone that has already traveled the path that you are now on, can assist in landing that dream job, or can share lessons learned as well as dos and don’ts. Whether it is through social media, face-to-face, nursing organizations, or a friend of a friend, networking provides an opportunity to return the favors that were once offered along the way. It is a system of giving and receiving that has, one way or another, assisted us all on our path to where we are right now and will continue to help us as we all strive to get to where we are going.

I too look forward to fostering relationships in this online community Walden created. As a nurse, I feel like we network with many different individuals daily. I have unintentionally networked with patients and visitors. Is there anyone, in particular, you networked with that you feel helped you in your career? I look forward to being on this journey with you. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jessica.  I like your thought of networking unintentionally with our patients and visitors.  Us nurses try to keep boundaries between patient and nurse.  Working in pediatrics for all of my nursing career, I have tried very hard to keep those boundaries.  Parents would often want to reach out through social media.

But I never thought of networking with them to help with advancement or job possibilities or even just a friendship.

These are very good questions. Social change is something that we should all strive to incorporate into our practice. I feel as if it is like dropping a rock into a pond. The effects of one action will encourage others to also engage in positive social change. I will be incorporating social change into my future practice. I am not exactly sure how as yet, but as I  learn the needs of my particular population demographics, I will be able to narrow down areas to focus on.  I would define a scholar-practitioner as an individual who has an insatiable thrust for knowledge and application. The “scholar” side wants to stay abreast of current evidence-based research and information. The “practitioner” side is excited to put newly acquired information into practice and share this knowledge with others to invoke change and change lives. Therefore, the scholar-practitioner to me not only wants to learn but also apply that knowledge to change lives. Walden will prepare me for the role of a scholar-practitioner by ensuring that I am not only equipped with the tools needed but also know how to apply said tools to future practice.

      Hello Ieshia,

I enjoyed reading your post, I can certainly relate, when talked about choosing Walden for its flexibility, I have a 4-month-old little girl and currently working full time. Therefore, to be able to go to school and still have my everyday life keep going like normal is a blessing. I’m also nervous, but very excited for what Walden university has in store for me as I pursue my Psych-Mental NP. Walden has a great number of resources, to help students to be successful, I was particularly impressed by the center for social change connective hub that you mentioned in your post, I appreciated that they even have a suicide prevention page, given the rise in mental illness and suicide rates I found that to be very considerate.

Ieshia, great post and welcome to this class. I look forward to embarking on this journey with you! I can relate to post about always being on the go. I also am a mother of three beautiful girls, that always seem to have several things going at once.

One of Waldens’ goals states, ” to produce graduates who are scholarly, reflective practitioners and agents of positive social change.” I actually chose Walden because of their flexible online platform. It allows me to continue being that “agent of positive social change.” In the age of social media, more people than ever have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals.

    Introduction

My name is Jessica Sehy, and I currently live in Georgia with my husband and our three children. I have two boys—one is 8, the other is 4—and we also have a 9-week-old daughter. I’ve been a nurse for 7 years, with 5 of those years spent as an LPN, and the last two as an RN. Throughout my nursing career, I’ve worked in many different specialties, which has allowed me to develop a broad range of skills. My ultimate goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with a focus on pediatrics and women’s health.

My Professional and Academic Goals Along with Walden University’s Vision and Mission

My current academic goal is to obtain a master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), with a post-master’s certificate in pediatric acute care. According to Walden University’s mission, the College of Nursing is dedicated to “excellence in nursing education and provides programs to transform diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity” (Walden University, 2022). This aligns perfectly with my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner focused on pediatrics and women’s health.

I want to be part of the positive change in healthcare by not only treating patients but by advancing health equity and promoting healthcare access for underserved communities. Walden’s approach to nursing education emphasizes developing nursing leadership, and I believe this will be crucial in helping me grow in my decision-making and problem-solving skills. Nurses, especially Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs), play a vital role in improving healthcare outcomes, and I look forward to learning more about evidence-based practice and how to integrate new techniques into my work during my time at Walden.

One of the goals of Walden University is to “create an inclusive teaching and learning environment where students expand on their existing professional nursing knowledge to improve workplace and healthcare outcomes” (Walden University, 2022b). I believe that this kind of collaborative environment, where we can share ideas with other scholars, is exactly what I need to grow in my career. As an FNP, I want to be an innovator and leader in social change in healthcare, and Walden’s commitment to nursing practice and social change aligns perfectly with my aspirations.

MSN Program Outcomes in Relation to My Professional and Academic Goals

As a nurse working in a small town hospital, I encounter a diverse range of clients from various backgrounds and with different healthcare needs. One of the outcomes of Walden’s MSN program that resonates with my goals is the ability to “evaluate health needs of diverse populations for necessary teaching/coaching functions based on specialized nursing knowledge to restore/promote health and prevent illness/injury” (Walden University, 2022a). This outcome is directly relevant to my desire to work in pediatrics and women’s health, as I will need to assess and address the unique health challenges of these populations.

By completing the MSN program at Walden, I will be able to promote health and wellness within my community. I will gain the skills to assess patients of all ages, coach them toward achieving their health goals, and create a safe and supportive environment for them. In my role as an FNP, I plan to restore health and prevent further injury or illness, using the tools and knowledge Walden provides to become a confident and competent nurse practitioner. Walden’s emphasis on evidence-based practice will allow me to implement the best and most current care strategies, which is especially important in pediatric and women’s health settings.

    Importance of Networking

As I work toward my goal of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), I recognize the importance of professional networking. Networking provides a unique opportunity to connect with other healthcare professionals and gain insights that can help me advance in my career. Through networking, I can learn from others with more experience and open doors to new opportunities. Whether through online nursing communities, professional conferences, or connecting with colleagues in pediatrics and women’s health, building a strong professional network is key to success in the field.

In addition to gaining career insights, networking can also help me discover new job opportunities, stay informed about changes in healthcare, and find resources to support my academic goals. By interacting with other nurse practitioners (NPs) and nursing leaders, I can learn about best practices, new research, and evidence-based practices that can inform my future practice as an FNP.

I plan on using my existing hospital contacts to help me network into the right nurse practitioner role for me, especially as I pursue my specialization in pediatrics and women’s health. By staying engaged with others in the healthcare field, I will be able to learn new skills and approaches that will help me become a better nurse practitioner. Networking also helps provide a support system, which is critical in avoiding burnout and managing the challenges of a career in healthcare. As Schmidt (n.d.) notes, job dissatisfaction and burnout are key concerns in nursing, and being able to connect with peers who understand the stresses of the profession is invaluable (Para. 23).

    Conclusion

In conclusion, my academic and professional goals align perfectly with Walden University’s vision of social change and its commitment to producing nursing leaders who can make a positive impact on healthcare outcomes. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Walden will equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), with a focus on pediatrics and women’s health. Through evidence-based practice, health promotion, and an emphasis on social change, I will be well-prepared to serve my community and help those who need access to quality healthcare.

Moreover, the emphasis on networking at Walden will allow me to connect with other healthcare professionals and expand my career opportunities, ensuring that I have the support and resources needed to succeed in this rapidly evolving field. I look forward to becoming part of a community of scholar-practitioners who are dedicated to improving healthcare and advancing health equity for all.

Hello Jessica, thank you for sharing a little bit about your life with us. I truly admire how you want to give back to your community and serve those in need. As a woman and a mom, I understand why you feel the need to focus on pediatrics and women’s health, there is so much that can be done to help and create awareness in that specific population. A lot of women in our communities don’t get the proper testing and treatment for preventable diseases. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, you will have the opportunity to stablish a trusting relationship with your patients, which in return will give you the satisfaction of changing their lives in ways you can’t imagine. I admire you for starting school with a 9-week-old baby, it really shows your passion and how much you want it.

In my case, I want to focus on mental health, I want to help those that might not have anything physically wrong, but perhaps need help the most. I think Walden is the prefect school for us, it. Will give us the foundation and the knowledge we need to better care for our patients.

      Great post!!

My Professional and Academic Goals Along with Walden University’s Vision and Mission

As stated in Walden University College of Nursing’s mission and vision, the institution prepares professionals to advance the greater good of global communities by providing educational programs designed to transform students into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity. This aligns perfectly with my own belief that nursing is a pathway to social change and community improvement. As a critical care nurse for 28 years in various roles—from bedside nurse to administrative positions—I’ve gained valuable insight into how nurses can impact the lives of individuals and communities. This experience has shaped my understanding of how we, as healthcare professionals, have a responsibility to advocate for and improve the health of those we serve.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in different countries and work with pediatric populations, which exposed me to the profound challenges faced by young people who lack adequate mental health support and resources. The deficiencies in mental health care have particularly impacted Generation Z, who have been facing escalating issues like social anxiety, stress, and grief following the COVID-19 pandemic. As reported by The Guardian, the post-pandemic world has created what seems to be a “sacrificed generation,” a group pushed aside and labeled as a “problem” to be dealt with later. The grief and loss of loved ones, financial instability, and overall economic decline have left deep psychological scars on this younger generation.

In light of these challenges, I began to reflect deeply on how I could contribute to improving the mental health of young people, especially in underserved communities. The realization that the mental health crisis among youth is worsening drove me to seek a new career path—one that would allow me to make a direct impact on mental health care. After much research, I decided to advance my nursing career by pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at Walden University, where I can focus on mental health. Walden’s approach to nursing education and social change aligns perfectly with my own goals of becoming part of the solution to the mental health crisis facing the next generation.

MSN Program Outcomes in Relation to My Professional and Academic Goals

One of the key outcomes of Walden’s MSN program is to “evaluate the health needs of diverse populations for necessary teaching and coaching functions based on specialized nursing knowledge to restore and promote health and prevent illness/injury” (Walden University, 2022a). This directly aligns with my goal of addressing the mental health needs of the pediatric population, particularly those dealing with social isolation, anxiety, and stress. Advancing my career in mental health nursing at Walden University will help me develop the specialized skills and knowledge needed to recognize and respond to the mental health challenges faced by young people.

Having worked in various settings, I have witnessed firsthand how mental health disorders can impede an individual’s ability to thrive. I’ve seen how children and adolescents, particularly those in underserved communities, are at risk for mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, especially after experiencing the trauma of loss and instability. With the MSN program at Walden, I will gain the necessary clinical competencies to evaluate health needs, develop evidence-based interventions, and deliver compassionate care that addresses the root causes of these issues. The program’s focus on health promotion and clinical practice will also give me the tools I need to prevent mental health challenges from worsening and to improve the overall well-being of the populations I serve.

Walden University’s emphasis on social change in nursing will equip me with the perspective and knowledge to take a proactive approach to mental health care. It’s not just about providing care in the moment—it’s about being part of a movement that advocates for mental health awareness and access to mental health services in underserved and vulnerable communities.

    Importance of Networking

As discussed earlier, the world today faces numerous social challenges, and one of the most effective ways to address these challenges is by networking. Networking allows healthcare professionals, especially those in the mental health field, to connect with others who share similar goals and aspirations. By building relationships with mental health care providers, nursing leaders, and community advocates, we can come together to share insights, exchange ideas, and collaborate on solutions to pressing issues.

Networking can also enhance social skills and self-confidence, as it provides opportunities to discuss ideas with like-minded individuals, share experiences, and learn from one another. These connections will help me broaden my understanding of mental health care and introduce me to new strategies and best practices for addressing the growing mental health crisis. Additionally, networking opens up opportunities for professional development and career growth. By connecting with others in the field of mental health and nursing leadership, I can stay updated on the latest research, innovations in care, and advocacy efforts aimed at improving mental health services.

Networking also creates a sense of community, which is especially important in nursing. It provides a support system for professionals dealing with the stresses and challenges of the field. As Schmidt (n.d.) notes, the connection between job dissatisfaction and nurse burnout is critical, and networking with other professionals can offer emotional and practical support, reduce isolation, and prevent burnout (Para. 23). In my case, networking with fellow nurses and mental health professionals will be invaluable as I advance in my career and work toward my goal of becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). It will help me gain the confidence and skills needed to make a lasting impact on mental health care in the communities I serve.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, my decision to pursue an MSN in Mental Health at Walden University is directly aligned with the university’s mission of fostering social change and health equity. Through Walden’s commitment to nursing education, clinical practice, and community health, I will be equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to make a positive impact on the mental health challenges facing Generation Z and other underserved populations. I look forward to becoming part of Walden’s scholar-practitioner community and using the skills and insights I gain to advocate for mental health care and contribute to meaningful social change in the field of nursing.

Networking will play a crucial role in my journey, helping me connect with other professionals, gain new perspectives, and stay informed about developments in mental health care. With the support of my nursing peers, I am confident that I can become a leader in the field of mental health nursing and help shape a better future for the next generation.

People can now communicate using a variety of methods, including SMS, emails, cell phones and social media. People respond to each other quickly in these forms of communication compared to the outdated ones (paper communications). It’s got much easier to search information on any career/profession in details as when you want to learn more about anything, you usually Google it first.

Hi Anna, thank you for sharing. I admire your goal of becoming a champion of change, starting with an end goal in mind, thus making that small step that will propel you towards that giant leap into the future. With this approach, I see how you were able to hone in on Walden as your university of choice. Walden’s Center for Social Change highlights fostering positive social change by “listening carefully and deeply about the needs of others so one can be authentically responsive” (2022). The guiding values of the center for social change directly coincide with your vision.

I like what you said about creating a network of aspiring like-minded individuals in similar industries. As students of Walden, we are now members of a vast networking community of like-minded individuals. This diverse community spans the globe and allows for networking, interaction, and learning from exceptional individuals from all walks of life whom we would have otherwise never met (Walden University, LLC. (Producer), 2018). I have been a nurse for eight years and have seen how nursing has evolved. Being a nurse for 28 years has given you a broad and unique perspective on how nursing has transitioned to meet our ever-changing population needs. Are there any changes that have occurred over the years that you feel, in your opinion, should have remained tried and true? Thanks again for sharing, Anna. I look forward to our interaction throughout this course.

It’s difficult even to comprehend the dread this generation of youngsters and adults has experienced. It affected people of all ages to be socially isolated due to the pandemic. Another reason why mental health is so crucial is that social media has had an impact on the younger generation, where concerns about appearance can lead to depression, anxiety, and insecurities. Mission and Vision for Academic and Professional Success

The vision and mission statements of Walden University, as well as the College of Nursing, align with the values and goals of this nurse regarding academia, and as a nursing professional. The university’s goals and social change perspective coincide with this nurse’s as well. In consideration of social change desires, networking can be an integral element of inciting change.

    Mission and Vision Statements

The most recent version of Walden’s catalog reflects a vision of graduates gaining knowledge through higher education and applying that knowledge to actual life circumstances to effect a positive change, globally. The College of Nursing’s vision is harmonious with this as well, noting a desire to prepare graduates to “advance the greater good of global communities.” In addition to the vision statements, the mission statements of Walden University and the College of Nursing also mirror one another. Both institutions highlight shaping a diverse population of graduates into vessels of positive change within societies. This change can serve to impact multiple areas, which can include global health and wellness initiatives. As a PMHNP student, I desire to do just this. I believe that mental health issues have been grossly overlooked in the past, and have just recently begun getting the recognition deserved. I believe that the potential for effecting a positive change in the area of mental health and wellness is immense, and I am eager to gain the knowledge and skills to be able to become an effective advocate for the future of mental health care.

    Goals and Social Change

Walden University’s goals and social change perspective also coincide with my goals and social change desire in regard to my chosen specialty. Quality and integrity are two words that stand out when reading the goals section of the university’s catalog. These have always been at the top of my list of ongoing goals as an individual and as a nursing professional. A concept that resonates with me as a previous nurse educator, is the process of research and the application of critical thinking that will lead to learning that promotes “professional excellence.”

    Networking

Networking can be seen as a way of diving into various aspects of society on different levels to familiarize oneself with not only circumstance and function but with people who share similar interests and/or causes. This can be a way of advancing one’s professional self or purpose. While some have no issues with networking and oftentimes enjoy it, not everyone is comfortable with networking. Schmidt encourages those who think negatively regarding networking to think of it as interacting with people who share interests with whom knowledge can be shared to aid one another’s cause.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, mission and vision statements are important elements in the development of a sound plan for both academic and professional growth. They can help to provide structured goals of what one specifically wants to gain on the path of success in his or her chosen field of practice. By incorporating solid goals and fostering a global societal outlook, the impact of that success can become immense.

During this course my expectation is to gain as much knowledge as possible to better prepare myself for my duty as a PMHNP in a city like Miami, which there’s an epidemic of mental health issues on the rise. As an immigrant , Walden University’s vision, mission, goals, and social change align with my academic and future professional goals. As stated in the mission statement”Walden University provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change”(Walden University, 2022b). As careers goals, I would like to finish successfully this post Master in PMHNP program and find a place where I could apply all the good knowledge I’ve obtained from this program, to better serve my community.

    Importance of Networking

During this course, I will work in the process of getting better and more comfortable in implementing the knowledge acquired in class.I will attain these objectives by dedicating as many hours as needed daily to reading and accomplishing my weekly assignments. Hello, Jeandy! What jumped out at me from your post is that your goal as a future PMHNP is quite like mine. With that being said, it is nice to know that our college of choice has the same goal for us. Walden is interested in preparing us to become successful in that role in order to impact a change for the good, globally. This is a vision that I have. By impacting our communities, we are impacting the world around us through those people whom we influence can hopefully impact others, and so on and so on. Interestingly enough, I feel like this is one more way to network. Through forming those relationships with others, we will likely meet additional people who we may be able to effect a positive change in as well. Schmidt (2018) did point out that social networking can be done on either a professional or a personal level.

Walden and College of Nursing Mission and Vision

Walden University’s mission and vision statement indicate that knowledge is worthy and graduates can apply this to solve societal challenges to advance the greater global good. I picked Walden because its nursing school envisions laying a foundation where health, nursing, and other related sciences will advance the provision of nursing services across humanity, to meet global, local, and individual needs (College of Nursing, n.d.). WU provides various professional opportunities to transform individuals to impact positive change in the community. The university has a Library that improves the learners’ research skills to facilitate professional success and foster critical thinking skills (Walden University, n.d.). I also picked WU because it supports ethical nurse practitioners who are professional and civic role models to society and professionals.

Reflection on My Professional and Academic Goals as They Relate to the PMHNP

Nursing is the improvement, protection, and promotion of health and abilities, individual medical care and support, identification to relieve suffering, stopping injuries and illnesses, and supporting the individual, family, and society’s care (ANA, n.d.). Thus, the nursing profession is crucial for society to provide economical and quality care. I want to develop my skills and competence in mental health. Mental and physical health is crucial for a person to live meaningfully and happily. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I hope to be trained to be compassionate to the patients I will be dealing with. The primary goal for pursuing this course is to gain skills for combating the stigma attached to mental health and helping mentally ill individuals and their families. As a PMHNP, I possess a crucial skill of professional compassion that will enable me to be empathetic and compassionate to strangers. Evidence shows that empathetic relationships can reduce disputes among healthcare providers and improve patient outcomes and satisfaction (Kerasidou et al., 2020). Therefore, compassion and empathy are my strengths because they are crucial ingredients in nursing care.

How Information in the Resources Fit with My Goals and the Plan to become a Scholar-Practitioner

The course resources provide MSN learning outcomes, outlining what the students should attain. The first outcome is synthesizing system leadership, and the second is critiquing the evidence-based literature (Walden University, n.d.). This implies that as a scholar-practitioner, I should rely on the best available evidence from the literature to tailor evidence-based interventions. According to Dale, Hallas, and Spratling (2019), critiquing research studies helps a nurse to remain updated in scientific literature. Therefore, the materials justify my goal of improving and refining my research endeavors.

Consideration for Collaborating with Professional and Academic Individuals to Support My Effort as a University Student

To solve the challenges of preparing competent nursing students, professional teams collaborate for better health outcomes. According to Quality and Safety Education for Nurses, collaboration and teamwork are the keys to fostering competencies that nursing students should attain (Hermann et al., 2016). Interprofessional education is crucial for preparing nursing students for teamwork, interprofessional collaboration, and communication.

The importance of Networking and How It May Help in Achieving the Professional and Academic Goals

The key benefit of networking is exchanging information on experiences, goals, and challenges. It allows nursing students to gain new insights. Networking is crucial in attaining my academic goals of researching pervasive mental health problems impacting the population. Networking has numerous opportunities to communicate research ideas to a wider audience and find out what other peers are up to—networking benefits both parties because it means that the professionals should build connections. According to Jacobs et al. (2019), networking is crucial for increasing visibility, including a better option, improving business growth, creating a more robust support network, and creating more impactful connections.

    INTRODUCTION

As a veteran nurse with nearly nineteen years practical experience, working from Med Surg to mental health. I began to have a desire to go into the the mental health field after being diagnosed with bipolar myself. After many attempts to deal with my issues and eventually finding an excellent treatment  program, I emerged with a greater knowledge of mental health. My desire is to achieve a mental health practitioner’s degree so that I may reach out to those who have also struggled to find adequate professional services.

    WALDEN UNIVERSITY’S VISION AND MISSION

After researching many other universities, I chose Walden because it is an online school. After attending Walden for 2 years now, it is very user friendly and well organized. All the professors are well knowledgable, courteous, and quick to respond to concerns. One of Walden’s goals (2022b) states “to provide its programs through diverse process learning approaches all resulting in outcomes of quality and integrity” (para.3.) After being in the medical field for some time, This goal is needed more in our field of practice.

    IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING

As a professional, networking is essential in this tech-saavy world. It is a great way to keep in contact with current and former employers. In addition, it helps build and promote a culture of information sharing and knowledge between seasoned and newer nurses. Schmidt (n.d.) talks about younger nurses should defer to their veteran counterparts (para.24.)

Hello, my name is Zulay Lantigua Ruano and I currently reside in Miami Florida. I have been a nurse since 2018, I have worked in Telemetry, Surgical Medicine and I am currently in PACU. I got my BSN at National College University in 2021, I am very happy to start my Master. I have no children but I have two beautiful 4-year-old fresh bulldogs. I never stop learning something new every day. Discovering new things is a great way to stay interested in life. In addition, the knowledge that comes can break down walls that previously seemed indestructible. This goal is in line with the Walden University mission of helping graduates transform themselves as scholar practitioners and in the process implement social change.

My professional goals as a nurse are in line with the vision of the Walden College of Nursing to enhance the provision of nursing services that promote the needs of individuals ion the community. I am looking forward to aligning myself as a scholar-practitioner to effectively provide care that is culturally competent and that is evidence-based with the goal of transforming the society (Walden University, 2022). The college of nursing vision and mission statements are in line with my goals towards becoming a competent nurse in the profession. In line with the MSN program outcomes, I intend to analyze evidence-based practices to promote the quality of care that is provide to the patients. In addition, I intend to use my knowledge to assess the health needs of different populations and craft care initiatives that promote healthcare.

Networking is important in nursing especially in one’s path towards achieving professional and academic goals. Nurses are able to get involved and become engaged through the process of networking. Having a face-to-face interaction with other nurses has a lot of value as it ensures that nurses can learn from each other (Hamlin, 2022). Networking helps in meeting like-minded people who have the same ambitions and struggles especially in addressing how nursing is changing in the modern healthcare.

      Welcome Zulay!

You live where I only dream about getting to at least once a year!! My family and I enjoy going down to Miami in the summer and hanging out on the beach. I live in Missouri and we don’t have beaches and year-round warm weather.

I recently attended a nursing conference in Sarasota, FL and it was a great networking opportunity to be able to collaborate with other individuals who specialize in your same area of specialty and also gave me an opportunity to hear some of the struggles that others faced in their early stages of their career.  A key takeaway for me during the Pandemic is that healthcare providers and professionals can not work in silo! It takes several collaborating efforts in order to meet the goals of patients and the needs of the community. It took the collaborating efforts of the IT department with nursing to be able to have effective telehealth, collaborating with transportation companies to get patients back and forth to appointments, and healthcare providers communicating with each other on best practices on how to care and treat patients.

The use of “smart” equipment or devices has open up several opportunities and methods for healthcare professionals to engage with one another from the ambulance to the hospital.  New life-saving equipment comes from specialized vendors, conforming to the veracity of national standards, and often implements proprietary protocols. Smart devices connects smart hospitals, clinics, kiosks, and ambulances to the patients in a coherent and collaborative way. Doctors have access to their patients’ medical records irrespective of their geographic location and patients are equipped with smart medical sensors that are implantable/wearable all in an effort to improve patient lives and outcomes (A. Jaleel et al., 2020).

Healthcare 4.0 is a framework to connect, automate and autonomize healthcare services. Its objective is to increase the efficient, effective, affordable, enhanced and personalized healthcare services to the public . Some of the important benefits of adopting Healthcare 4.0 include the ability to use healthcare data to detect and control infectious diseases faster and more effectively; creating more accurate models for chronic illnesses based on data not only from patient’s medical records, but also from life styles patterns, and environmental conditions; facilitating sharing of resources and information among healthcare service providers to optimize utilization; creating powerful data analytics capabilities based on the high volumes of data collected and generated by healthcare systems; enhancing and personalizing patients care; and offering patients high quality healthcare services at affordable costs (J. Al-Jaroodi, 2022).

This is why healthcare providers networking on different areas and topics is extremely important because not only does it help individuals grown professional and personally but it also helps to improve the lives of others by lending your expertise to others in the advancement of health system operations.

    Hello Professor and class,

My name is Danielle Isaguirre and I have been a nurse for 16 years. As I rose through the ranks of healthcare, I had a mission in mind which was to provide a space for healing with advanced knowledge to help others. I began my Nursing career as an LPN working in Corrections and Psych. By working with these populations, I felt that there was a need to expand healing not just physically with the body, but mentally with the mind. This population was very underserved as far as care from beyond the bars. They lacked knowledge of how to care for themselves wholely and reach out to obtain the necessary resources which could have resulted in better decisions and a different mindset. After working with this population for a while, I begin to learn how to listen with my eyes and feel with my ears. I know this sounds crazy, but when you focus on the need of others, a new perspective of thinking manifest itself. As a growing professional, I felt like the doors of opportunity had opened up to something greater not only for me but for the different populations I have worked with throughout my career.

As I began to develop my career, I returned to school to become a Registered Nurse. I worked with Oncology patients, Cardiac patients,  Geriatric patients, and Medical Surgical patients which tend to be a mixture of all specialties. I learned that the key deficit of every population I have ever worked with was a knowledge deficit. Educating the community about their body, health practices, health maintenance, and resources to seek help became the common denominator of empowering change within the healthcare community. As I continue to develop myself as an Advanced Practice Nurse, I can align my professional and academic goals with Walden University’s mission which is to empower change within the healthcare community with my peers, patients, and prospective community, and build a community of knowledge sharing by networking with colleagues. (Walden University 2022)

Building social networks are the key to professional growth. As mentioned before, knowledge sharing with fellow colleagues expands your thinking skills and helps with collaborative measures to innovate something great within the community of healthcare. Also, Networking creates relationships that can develop mentorship, stewardship, and togetherness of professional bonds that can turn into lasting friendships. Networking across your professional community can have a great impact on your professional goals and career.

      Hello Danielle,

Reading through your discussion has been enlightening as you describe yourself, and your experience in practice and relate personal goals with Walden University’s vision and mission. Your goal in the initial phase of practice may have established a basis for your success and built a foundation for the 16 years of nursing practice. Although I have only been a nurse since 2018, I feel that the guidance provided by my fellow nurses who are experienced in the field has been a great influence on my practice (Woo & Newman, 2020). I, therefore, resonate well with your goal of helping other nurses through the knowledge and skills you have gathered. I agree that your goals are aligned with the Walden University mission of empowering change within the healthcare community with my peers, patients, and prospective community, and building a community of knowledge sharing by networking with colleagues (Walden University 2022). I’ve been challenged to work more on building my social network which may translate to better employment opportunities.

Walden University’s Mission, Vision, and Goals and my Academic and Professional Goals

My name is Destiny Comer, and I am currently a nurse in Memphis, Tennessee. I have experience in home health as well as psychiatric nursing. I have always had a love for psychiatric nursing, and I knew without a doubt that becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner would be a long term career goal for myself. Walden University’s mission statement, vision, and goals coincide with my life and personal goals in so many ways. I took several months researching for a reputable University that would provide me with quality education, and would equip me to be the best Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to my future patients. I was introduced to Walden University by my mother who is a 2020 graduate of Walden’s social work program. I was certain that Walden University would be a fantastic fit for me after conducting extensive research, reading numerous reviews, examining the pricing, and considering a number of other aspects.

The mission of Walden University is to offer cutting-edge, learner-centered academic programs that value and take into account the information, abilities, and skills that each student brings to the classroom. One of Walden University’s goals is to provide a variety of process-learning strategies that results in high quality and integrity filled students. The prevalence of mental illness is at an all-time high, and it is reassuring to know that Walden University takes pride in developing competent nurses who will benefit the community in this time of need. I’m eager to get to know my peers and learn more about how we can all work together to advance the nursing profession, particularly in the area of mental health.

    The Importance of Networking

As a young child, my mother would always say, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. I would always brush this off, but now that I am an adult, I can clearly see how significant that phrase is. I now believe that it is BOTH who you know, and what you know. In order to establish relationships, exchange information, and create meaningful social and personal connections, networking is crucial. Additionally, networking offers chances for development, mentorship, and mind-expansion. The important and worthwhile contacts you form via networking are, in my opinion, the most significant component. According to a study from Eastern Michigan University, networking gives nurses the chance to promote knowledge exchange and the development of support networks. It provides both short-term and long-term advantages, most of which fall into the social-emotional, academic, and professional benefit categories. Networking has the power to open doors that might otherwise be closed to you. As we all begin this journey, I’m looking forward to networking with my fellow students and other healthcare professionals who can offer mentorship, support, and guidance.

      Hello Destiny Comer,

I really enjoyed reading your post, I can definitely relate to your mother saying, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”.  I totally agree with you as you stated, “In order to establish relationships, exchange information, and create meaningful social and personal connections, networking is crucial”.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 70% of jobs are found through professional networking. Opportunities that arise from networking are priceless and limitless (Walker, 2018) It great to see that you already have experience in psychiatric nursing.  Recently I have noticed on Facebook they are large groups of companies who are advertising there opening positions.  On the other hand, I also see negative comments from ex-employees.  The key to networking is building genuine relationships. Introduce yourself and your specialty; comment on posts; share relevant articles or resources to the group; most of all be active (Walker, 2018).  Let me ask your opinion is networking through Facebook, do you think it would be helpful or harmful to build genuine connections?

      Hey Destiny,

Totally agree these days mental health crisis has become so widespread and many people have beed unprepared to handle it. Because there is no enough awareness program and lack of resources. We need to  start the awareness program, and include class like yoga and meditation from the school level. We need to teach them how to handle stress and to get resources or accessbility to health services.

    Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Meagan Jones. I’ve been a nurse for 9 years and have spent the majority of my time in women’s health (NICU, Labor & Delivery, OB). Two years ago I completed by AGNP and have been working in primary care since. With everything that occurred during the pandemic and for the things that I was privy to witness, I noticed how now more than ever the mental health crisis is at an all-time high. I’ve spent a lot of my career working with low-income populations and realize that there is a huge gap that needs to be bridged between availability, need, and accessibility to mental health resources for those communities. I decided to return and pursue my post master’s certificate in mental health.

Walden University’s Mission, Vision, and Goals and my Academic and Professional Goals

I chose Walden University after doing quite a bit of research to determine which school checked off all the boxes for what I needed and the timeline in which things were needed. The mission statement itself, was exactly what I needed to solidify that decision, as it states that “Walden University provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2022). I know that after working in low-income areas my focus is to be able to bring as many of those resources back to these communities as I can. This also aligns with the program outcomes for the MSN program.

    The Importance of Networking

Networking, although simply enough is exchanging information and developing relationships serves a much greater purpose. According to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), networking as a nurse practitioner allows you to connect with jobs, stay abreast of changing health care regulations and practices, and connect you with other health care professionals to help with a more comprehensive view.

      Hello Meagan,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading reading your discussion post. It is extremely impressive and admirable to see that you have obtained your AGNP, and took it upon yourself to further your education because you saw a NEED in your community concerning mental health. I couldn’t agree more with you that there is such a need for mental health resources, accessibility, and availability in low-income and poverty stricken communities. According to an article posted by the National Library of Medicine, living in a low-income household has been associated with health disparities and a high probability of acquiring mental illnesses in both children and adults that can last a lifespan. Because of limited resources and availability, children and families in poverty are least likely to receive high-quality mental health care, despite their significant need for such services. You stated, “I know that after working in low-income areas my focus is to be able to bring as many of those resources back to these communities as I can.” I appreciate you sharing that because it shows how passionate you are about making a difference in your community and that you have a “giving mindset” by desiring to pour into those in need.

This is need to be addressed and it is important that needs to be educate people about mental health conditions and treat them, especially I am from the place where people sees psychiatric patient as hopeless. They disrespect them and judge them badly and there is no much resources for them get treated or they can go to . Though we nurses  plays vital role and let’s extend our hands not only treating, providing resources but also educate them.

    Introduction

Hello everyone, I am so excited about this course and making the first step to attaining one of my goals. I have been an RN for approximately six years. I started my career working on the telemetry floor and transitioning over to the ICU. I work as a travel ICU nurse and enjoy working in different states. I have always wanted to become Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse since nursing school. However, I needed help finding the time. Now that the nest is almost empty and I can attend classes online from anywhere, it is time to move! Moreover, I will be empowered to face fears and embrace my God-given dreams of becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

How Walden’s Vision, Mission and Social Change Initiatives Relates My Professional and Academic Goals

After years of contemplating whether to achieve my professional goal of becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I decided to step into the arena and conquer fears. Many factors based on Walden’s vision, mission, and social change initiatives go hand in hand with achieving my professional and academic goals. Of course, the first step on a new journey is hard. As I began researching schools and their cost to attend, I realized you could not put a price tag on the quality of Education. According to Walden’s vision statement. The College endeavors to be recognized for its preeminent programs and innovative educational approaches that prepare distinguished graduates to advance the greater good of global communities (Walden, 2019). One of the challenges as advanced nurses; we are tasked with more responsibilities due to our level of Education and knowledge. One of my goals as a PMHNP is to help effect change at the community level in Education or health promotion. Obtaining my MSN at Walden will help me become a scholar-practitioner in the mental health field. Prepare professional nursing leaders who are empowered to promote positive social change for individuals, families, and populations by addressing the social determinants of health locally, nationally, and globally (Walden, 2019). This statement also relates to my professional goal as a nurse. To make a change at the community level is advocacy, which registered nurses do daily for their patients. This involves fighting for or pushing for the health rights of undeserving or vulnerable populations. Incorporating this type of change in my community will require reaching patients to provide patient care through the advancement of Education I receive from Walden University.

    Importance of Networking

Networking is critical because of the need to form collaborative partnerships with others. Social media and Facebook are options for networking with people with the same interest.  It is quickly becoming the number one resource for professional networking. It is one of the most effective ways to build alliances. Tens of millions of people use the internet, and social media is (Walker, 2018) The impact of networking will be tremendous helpful in number of posted nursing jobs, and the increased chances for professional advancement.

As a nurse working in the ED I can say mental health needs more professionals in that area. Due to shortages in nursing and MH NP’s patients spend days in the ED waiting for placement. It really slows down the flow of the ED. As far as social media being a great networking area, I never once looked at it as that until this discussion module. I was completely unaware. I consider myself educated now! Good luck in class!

        Hello, Dr. Jessica Leigh Naber

Thank you for inquiring about my insightful post this week regarding “fighting for or pushing for the health rights of undeserving or vulnerable populations.” Moreover, how I will achieve this in my practice and how Walden will help me with this task. According to the Mission statement, “The College of Nursing, dedicated to excellence in nursing education, provides programs to transform diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity (Walden, 2019). Because of this mission statement which aligns with my profession, earning my Master’s degree from Walden University will prepare me in a unique position to intervene at the system level through the policy formation process and to affect health and health care through advocacy techniques. Nevertheless, with a master’s degree, I will have the clinical knowledge and educational background to advocate for the passage of legislation regarding healthcare issues. One way I will fight for or push for the health right of underserving populations is to write to my state or federal legislators regarding a health policy bill that has been filed. Another great tool I will possess earning my Master’s degree is the skill of networking; this will also help me achieve my professional goal. Nurse Practitioners can join organizations that lobby on behalf of patients (Chilton, 2014). Mentorship-based leadership development programs are offered by professional nursing organizations (PNOs) to enhance the number of nurse leaders in the field. For example, most Professors who teach in the College of Nursing here at Walden University have Master’s degrees, which was a significant factor in choosing this school. Nurses with a master’s degree possess various relevant abilities and expertise. Their experience providing care and interacting with patients gives them insight into implementing policies. PNOs provide informative position statements and educational resources to inform their constituents on crucial relevant policies and encourage members to make their voices heard at the federal, state, and institutional levels (Goolsby DuBois, 2017). Master’s prepared nurses can position themselves to work in government policy development by becoming involved in state and national nursing organizations. State boards of nursing will broaden the nurse’s chances of directly impacting healthcare policies (Miller & Blackstock, 2016).

    Hello professor and class,

Hello. I am a registered nurse and was previously a CNA and LPN. While I was working as a staff nurse, I was promoted to supervisor and then later became a nursing educator. With the stress of COVID-19 and management, I got a heart attack, prompting me to leave that role. Currently, I am working at Bellevue Hospital at night and as a school nurse part-time during the day.

Walden and College of Nursing’s mission, vision, and goals relate significantly to my professional and academic goals and my objective of becoming a scholar-practitioner. The Walden University mission aligns with my professional goals since it promotes a diverse community of career professionals to enhance positive social change. I aim to impact the community by being culturally competent, which will enable me to be aware of the cultural needs of diverse populations and provide essential care that respects people’s values and beliefs. The Walden University mission incorporates diverse career professionals, essential in instilling expertise to adapt to various health challenges and incorporate diversity in care provision (Walden University, 2022). The university’s vision also aligns with my academic and professional goals, which are to learn and implement nursing knowledge and expertise to provide solutions to health challenges. The vision entails providing 21st-century learning that gives graduates the expertise to provide immediate solutions to societal issues.

An MSN program learning outcome related to my professional and academic goals is that after completing the program, I will demonstrate the ability to communicate using clear and oral, written, and information technology to deliver quality nursing care. Learning how to communicate is essential in attaining my professional goal of becoming a specialist nurse and addressing health challenges. Through clear communication, I can share knowledge with other healthcare professionals and interact with patients to understand their needs to address them. Good communication is also important in achieving my academic goals of attaining good grades since I will need to consult with peers and the diverse community of nurses to gain more knowledge in my MSN program.

Networking is critical in attaining my professional goals. Goolsby and Knestrick (2017) explain that professional networking develops relationships that create new opportunities, collaborative research, personal development, and evidence-based practice. Through networking, I can get opportunities to collaborate with other health professionals to provide positive health changes. Networking is also useful in attaining my academic goals since it creates opportunities for consulting others to increase my knowledge.
