NURS 8002 BLOG: THE DNP-PREPARED NURSE AND THEIR COMMUNITY
In my organization, one pressing issue we’ve been grappling with is the extended length of hospital stays for patients. This issue is of paramount importance as it not only drives up costs but also has adverse effects on patient health. Prolonged hospital stays can lead to an increased risk of hospital-acquired complications such as healthcare-associated infections and falls, causing both financial burdens for patients and healthcare systems (Tipton, 2021). To address this concern, we initiated a practice change by implementing the throughput method. According to CenTrak (2023), the throughput method involves efficiently moving patients from admission to discharge, encompassing their care, resource allocation, and decision-making throughout their hospital stay.

When executed effectively, this approach enhances the quality of care patients receive and their overall satisfaction with their healthcare experience. Additionally, the adoption of interdisciplinary rounds has significantly improved patient outcomes by enhancing communication and care planning. As highlighted in Reduced Hospital Days and Dollars With Interdisciplinary Rounds (2018b), a study found that patients who underwent interdisciplinary rounds experienced a reduction in the length of stay from 6.1 to 5.5 days, resulting in a 17% cost reduction. Effective communication is vital for both the throughput method and interdisciplinary rounds, and technology plays a crucial role in obtaining faster and more reliable results from both processes. DNP graduates are uniquely positioned to utilize information systems and technology to enhance patient care, healthcare systems, and provide leadership within healthcare settings or academic institutions (AACN, 2006).

Another significant challenge in our organization is the shortage of healthcare staff, which has led to healthcare workers at the bedside with limited knowledge and experience. The prognosis, based on knowledge and experience, as well as multidisciplinary treatment and care, can have a substantial impact on the lives of ICU patients with complex conditions (Fukuda et al., 2020). To address this issue, continuous education programs were introduced to ensure that healthcare professionals stay updated on the latest treatments and procedures. As emphasized by Green (2022), continuous education is crucial for keeping medical professionals informed, maintaining their licenses, and sharpening their skills. Additionally, providing incentives for healthcare employees has been effective in attracting and retaining valuable staff. Although offering incentives may require an increased budget allocation, it helps employees feel valued and compensated in line with their contributions. This approach is particularly beneficial for retaining experienced nurses with a wealth of knowledge about disease processes and treatment responses. DNP graduates bring a breadth of knowledge from the field of science and possess the ability to quickly and effectively apply that knowledge to benefit patients in the demands of daily practice (AACN, 2006).
