A Guide to using EAQs as a Successful Nursing Student

A Guide to using EAQs as a Successful Nursing Student

Transitioning from completing prerequisites to tackling the entrance exam can be a pivotal step. If you’re gearing up for the HESI A2 entrance exam, you’re likely to come across Elsevier Adaptive Quizzing (EAQ)™. These quizzes simulate the types of nursing questions you’ll encounter, and while they can be challenging, they offer an excellent opportunity for growth. I’ve personally witnessed significant improvements in my course grades by investing time in practicing EAQs and delving into the rationales.

Tailoring Quizzes:
One of the most powerful tools available is the ability to customize quizzes. EAQs can be tailored to specific target areas or even the topics that will be covered in your upcoming course exams. These quizzes are highly versatile, allowing you to choose the number of questions you’d like to tackle. Whether it’s five questions or thirty, you can engage in either study mode or exam mode. I recommend the study mode as it provides answers along with rationales for each question.

My approach to studying for course exams transformed after practicing these quizzes. Instead of repeatedly reviewing slides, chapters, or lectures, I started focusing on question practice. This shift led to a remarkable improvement in my exam score from 68% to 82%, and I managed to maintain an average of 82% for the semester. I attribute this success to my dedication to specific EAQ questions.

Rationale Insights:
Previously, I’d answer questions without paying much attention to the rationale. However, I soon realized the treasure trove of information within these explanations. Rationales provide not only motivational advice but also excerpts from textbooks, graphs, diagrams, and more. Even when I answered correctly, I started reading the rationale. It often helped me understand why my answer was correct or how my rationale fell short, sometimes leaving me to guess.

Beyond correcting my answers, I’ve learned to use rationales as study guides. They point out crucial information from chapters, highlight missed assessment data, clarify medication listings, and provide insights into commonly overlooked side effects. Essentially, the rationales serve as invaluable guides.

Mastering Concepts:
Don’t be discouraged if you find the questions challenging. EAQs can be tough, and that’s by design. Practice is key. Revisit the same concept multiple times, at least five times, to notice patterns in how questions are framed. Working through sets of 30 questions repeatedly can help you identify recurring patterns. Take notes as you go along to consolidate your understanding.

Utilizing Calendar View:
The calendar view feature within EAQ is a gem. It eliminates the need for an external planner as it displays all your assignment due dates. Use it to mark your study days before and after each concept is taught. This function serves as a time gauge and requires commitment. After all, your grades hinge on it. Utilize the calendar to plan ahead. For instance, if you have a coping EAQ due in three weeks, start gathering resources and customizing practice questions related to coping. You’ll start recognizing question formats and can refine your answering strategies through practice.

Time Management:
One standout feature of EAQ is its time-tracking capability. Each question’s time taken is recorded. Given that many nursing school exams have time constraints, this feature is vital. While I don’t advocate rushing through exams, I’ve seen many students struggle to complete tests due to time constraints. To build your time management skills, create a journal to log how long it takes to answer 30 EAQ questions. Strive to reduce your time. I even recommend using apps like Forest, where I’d plant a tree for an hour and attempt to answer as many questions as I could within that period. It adds a touch of fun to your study routine.

Sustained Success:
Success through EAQ is not a one-time endeavor. Consistency is key; daily practice is essential. Remember the calendar view I mentioned? Check it daily to avoid missing assignments. This has happened to me in the past, so now I prioritize checking my EAQ regularly.

Leveraging Analytics:
Many programs require mastering specific concepts, which necessitates investing time in practice questions. EAQ has levels of mastery, and consistently practicing is key to advancing through these levels. The analytics feature is a valuable tool. It can guide you in identifying areas that need improvement. EAQ provides quick suggestions based on your performance when you log in. For instance, if you’re at Level 1 mastery for leadership, practicing leadership questions can save you time when aiming for mastery. Refer to the image below for a visual example.

In Closing:
Remember, success with EAQs requires dedication and consistency. Trust the process, stay committed to practicing, and you’ll witness positive results. Patience is key, and improvement takes time along with a deep understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement. You’re on the right track. Embrace EAQs and enhance your nursing journey. P.S. -— expect gradual progress, but rest assured, your efforts will pay off.
