A Nursing Student’s Guide to Taking Care of Yourself on Sundays
Being a student nurse means you might not always make time for self-care. But taking care of yourself is really important during nursing school or any tough program. That’s why I make sure to focus on self-care every Sunday! Spending time on myself and getting in the right mindset for the week is how I prepare myself for success. It can be simple things like going for a nice long walk, painting my nails, or even taking an extra nap. I give myself this time to let my body reset and do what it needs to do.
In the medical field, especially in nursing, you need to learn how to balance and put important things first. As a student, setting aside a day for yourself is one of the first steps you can take to develop a good habit that will help you now and in the future after you graduate. It might take a while to figure out how to balance things and put yourself first, but here are some things I like to remember for my self-care Sundays!

Stay Active.
One of my favorite things to do on Sundays is to stay active. It’s good for your body and your mind. Starting the week off feeling productive after a good workout is an amazing feeling.
Be Present.
Nursing school can fill your mind even after class is done. If you’re always thinking about studying or homework, you might start feeling tired of it all before you know it. So, when you have a self-care day, be fully present in that time and focus on what you’re doing.
Be Social.
Being in nursing school might make it hard to spend time with friends outside of school. That’s why it’s important to set aside time to be social! Plan things with your friends and family on your days off. I like to spend Sundays with family and friends because being social is a form of self-care for me.
Rest.
The best part of my self-care days is when I can clear my mind and rest. This is my secret to starting the week well. During my rest time, I think about the past week and then leave it behind. It’s when I can just lay in bed and not worry about anything except taking a nice long nap! Resting can happen by the pool, at the beach, or in a cozy room. But the feeling of being well-rested when the Monday alarm rings is unbeatable. You feel READY to tackle the day!

If you are in nursing school, socializing with your friends outside of school may be a bit of a struggle. Therefore, it is essential to set time aside to be social! Make plans with friends and family on your days off. I like Sundays to have some family and friend time because I view socialization as a form of self-care!

I use my rest time to reflect on the week that passed and leave it in the past. This is when you just get to lay in bed and not have to worry about anything besides taking a long nap! Resting looks different to everyone; it can take place by the pool, beach, or in a cozy bedroom. But, nothing beats being well-rested when that Monday morning alarm hits and you feel READY to tackle the day!
These are just some things I like to remember when Sunday comes around, and I feel like I need some self-care. Remembering to look out for myself and dedicating a “day off” of school/work has allowed me to become the student nurse I want to be. Learning how to take care of yourself is just as important as taking care of patients!
