Assignment: Clinical Practice DNP 805
Details: For this assignment, select one clinical practice issue in nursing that involves a specific medication. Using a Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) system, design a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) that would be embedded in the EHR at your site of practice.
Your CDSS must connect with CPOE to include a medication. You must link these two applications within the design.

DNP 805 Topic 6 Assignment Telehealth
Details: Telehealth technologies encompass a wide range of basic to complex health care delivery options, with an equally expansive array of technologies that may be employed. For this assignment, you will locate a scholarly article published within the last 3 years in a peer-reviewed journal on telehealth. This assignment consists of two parts; Part One requires you to develop and present a two-paragraph assessment comprising a précis and critical evaluation of a scholarly article focusing on a telehealth technology, and the second part requires you to construct a Mind Map to generate ideas about how the telehealth technology you identified can be used in your current practice.
General Guidelines: Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center. Directions: PART I: Précis and Critical Evaluation.
Donald Davidson, in his book, American Composition and Rhetoric, discusses the précis as follows:
“A précis is not an outline, but a summary or digest. It is useful as an exercise in grasping the essential ideas of an already completed composition and in stating these ideas in concentrated form. The précis shears away all elaborations of the thought and gives only what is left, in such a way as to make the summary a complete composition. It does not, therefore, skeletonize the original composition so much as it reduces its scale. Many of the articles in The Reader’s Digest are only précis, so skillfully done that the average reader does not know that he is reading a summary. Since the précis says a great deal within a brief space, it is of great service in taking notes on library assignments and general reading.”
The précis should be an organization of ideas, include logical sequencing of points, contain clear and meaningful expression, and use language suitable to the situation. When finished, the précis should clearly state:
- A statement of what was studied (i.e., argued, discussed, deliberated).
- A statement of focus of the scholarly article you selected, (i.e., how it was organized and completed).
- A statement of what information was identified or learned from the scholarly article.
- A statement of why the information in the article is important to your field of study.
PART II: Mind Map.
Brainstorm to generate ideas about how the telehealth technology you identified can be used in your current practice using a mind map. Submit the final map along with the précis to the Topic drop box.
How to do it:
Take a sheet(s) of paper and write an identifiable main idea in the center of the page, using a one-three words. (You may also achieve this via an electronic sheet of “paper”).
Draw a branch off your main idea; on the branch write or draw a main topic related to your main idea.
Continue to branch off from your main idea with main topics as needed.
From your main topics, branch off with subtopics.
From your subtopics, branch off with supporting details (write and/or draw). Continue to add more details. You are free to add more topics, subtopics, or any other items.
When you stand back and survey your work, you should see a map: hence the name for this activity. At this point, you can start to form conclusions about how to approach a potential area of practice change. At the end of the day, what you do with the particular “map” or “cluster set” or “web” that you produce depends on what you need.
Submit both the précis and the final mind map in fulfillment of this assignment.
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
Assignment: Clinical Practice DNP 805
Thesis: The thesis is clear and forecasts the development of the paper, reflecting the arguments appropriately.
Streamlining Medication Management Processes in Psychiatric Care
Efficient management of medications is paramount in psychiatric care, particularly in inpatient units where patients undergo medication stabilization. Antipsychotic medications are commonly initiated either for the first time or when a patient is placed on a new medication, necessitating careful monitoring for adverse or significant side effects.
In cases where first-line antipsychotics or mood stabilizers prove ineffective, Clozapine becomes a viable option. This medication, however, demands meticulous management due to its potential life-threatening side effects, such as severe neutropenia (RxList, 2021). To prescribe Clozapine, weekly monitoring of Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) is mandatory, along with inclusion in a comprehensive database registry.
A Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) specifically tailored for Clozapine monitoring emerges as a critical component in psychiatric healthcare settings. This system plays a pivotal role in safeguarding patients from severe side effects. The required documentation, including patient side effects tracking, ANC, and White Blood Cell (WBC) results, must be diligently entered on a weekly basis when the provider seeks to prescribe the medication. Pharmacists then review this information, recommend appropriate dosages, and upon approval, proceed to fulfill the prescription order. This streamlined process ensures that patients receive the necessary care while minimizing the risks associated with the use of Clozapine.
RxList. Clozapine. 2021. https://www.rxlist.com/clozaril-drug.htm#description
Hello Ashley. Thank you for the engaging discussion. From the information shared, I’ve gained insights into the use of clozapine for patients who haven’t responded positively to first-line antipsychotic or mood stabilizers. A Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) is described as an interactive software application that aids in decision-making by providing assistance to clinicians, patients, or other decision-makers through information technology (Berrouiguet et al., 2017).
In the context of psychiatric drug prescribing, CDSSs play a crucial role in helping clinicians choose the most effective and safe medication for their patients, considering various factors such as patient preference, comorbidity, prior treatment response, and cost. Clozapine, classified as an atypical antipsychotic medication, demonstrates efficacy in treating refractory schizophrenia but is linked to serious side effects, including agranulocytosis (Lau et al., 2021). Recently developed CDSSs for clozapine monitoring aim to assist clinicians in optimizing clozapine treatment.
A study highlighted the positive impact of a CDSS for clozapine monitoring, indicating a reduction in missed doses and improved patient adherence to clozapine treatment (Verma et al., 2021). Moreover, the CDSS proved valuable in identifying patients at risk of developing side effects, enabling clinicians to take timely and appropriate actions. Therefore, the implementation of CDSS for clozapine monitoring emerges as a promising avenue to enhance the safety and efficacy of this treatment.
