The purpose of this reflective journal essay is to analyze personal experiences during the course DNP 820A.
Like many other advanced practice courses, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) 820A prepares nurses to handle complex patient issues by implementing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).

Reflection
DNP 820A expands the nurse student’s competencies in Nursing Education and Translating Research into Nursing Practice acquired in DNP 815A. Through it, the nurse student examines scientific evidence to guide improvements in Patient Care Outcomes. Generally, this reflective journal describes the core learning experiences that were pivotal in course completion. They include DPI project-related activities, literature review and appraisal, and weekly learning experiences. This course’s diverse and insightful experiences involved the following essentials.

Section I: Scientific Foundations for Practice
Nursing aims to positively impact the health of populations. The DNP program emphasizes advancing knowledge, enabling DNP nurses to apply expertise in achieving better patient outcomes (AACN, 2022). Early on, the course laid the groundwork for Quality Improvement in Nursing and Translating Research into Practice, involving tasks like finalizing the PICOT-D and delving into the roles of research translators and EBP.
Weeks 1-3 encompassed activities such as identifying and evaluating literature for the proposed DPI intervention and emphasizing the importance of critical appraisal and evidence levels. The course covered nursing and change theories, clarifying the scope of nursing practice and offering guidance on implementing change based on the best available evidence (Gasaba et al., 2021; Harrison et al., 2021). Critical appraisal ensures the validity and relevance of scientific evidence to practice, which is essential for improving Patient Care Outcomes.
Section II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking
Essential II concentrates on nursing competencies crucial for eliminating Healthcare Disparities and enhancing practice experiences. The DNP program equips nurses to address current and future health needs effectively (McCauley et al., 2020). Learning experiences included a deep dive into the components of a care bundle for pressure ulcers and how they contribute to different outcomes. These components encompass skin care, preventive dressing, and repositioning (Yap et al., 2021; Zhang et al., 2021). Successful practice change necessitates the DNP nurse to act as a Healthcare Leader and embrace systems thinking, recognizing that practice change is a collaborative effort.
Section III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice
Improving health contributes to better population health through new discoveries addressing complex practice problems. The course readied the DNP nurse to apply relevant findings from EBP and research to enhance practice and health outcomes (AACN, 2022). Learning experiences for Essential III involved critically appraising literature related to the effectiveness of a preventive care bundle for pressure ulcers and discussions on how incorporating EBP leads to higher-quality health care during weeks 4-6. Other relevant experiences included exploring the gap between research findings and implementation in week five and synthesizing literature for a preventive care bundle for pressure injuries. Clinical Scholarship plays a vital role in ensuring that the knowledge gained translates effectively into practice.
In Conclusion
The DNP 820A course focuses on applying knowledge to translate research into practice using appropriate nursing and change theories. This reflective essay aimed to describe course activities aiding the DNP nurse in achieving course objectives and AACN’s Essentials. These activities comprised weekly discussions, assignments, and project-related tasks, especially literature synthesis and appraisal. The journey through DNP 820A has emphasized the importance of reflective practice in nursing, enhancing personal and professional development while fostering a commitment to Quality Improvement in Nursing and addressing Healthcare Disparities.
