Growing up in a small town near Boston, I always thought I would stay in Massachusetts for college. However, when it was time to apply for nursing programs, I decided to explore all my options. Since I’m a citizen of both Canada and the United States, I had a lot of choices to consider.
Being a current university student with a background in biological sciences, I didn’t have a degree yet. This made Canadian schools more appealing. Many advanced nursing programs in the U.S. require a degree, but some Canadian programs don’t.

Navigating Online Nursing School
I found Cape Breton University (CBU) during my school search. It’s on Cape Breton Island and offers three nursing programs: a three-year direct entry from high school, a two-year advanced Standing Pathway, and an LPN to BScN Pathway. The two-year advanced option stood out to me because I’m passionate about nursing and wanted to start pursuing my dreams right away.
One big factor in choosing a Canadian nursing school was that the NCLEX® exam was now available in Canada. This meant I could get my NCLEX-focused education in Canada and have the choice to work in both countries.
Since the NCLEX was introduced in Canada in 2015, CBU’s nursing faculty knew they had to adjust their teaching to meet the NCLEX requirements. They partnered with Elsevier, a global company focused on science and health information, to provide the resources they needed.
After the first year of using Elsevier’s resources, CBU students achieved a pass rate of 92% on their first NCLEX exam. The national average for first-time test takers, according to the Canadian Council of Registered Nurse Regulators, was only 69.7%. If that doesn’t make a nursing student happy, I don’t know what would!
Mastering Med Surg: A Guide to Success
I’m currently in my second semester of the program and getting ready for my second clinical rotation on a Cardiac Med-Surge floor. As I continue my education at Cape Breton University, I’m constantly reminded that choosing this school was the right decision. CBU, along with the partnership with Elsevier, has structured their semesters to help students succeed. I’m excited to see where my nursing career will lead me, and I’m thankful to have the resources I need to become a great nurse.
