Before having my son, I worked at a car dealership for five years. However, three days before my maternity leave was supposed to end, I decided not to return to work. Tearfully, I told my boss that I wanted to stay home with my son and pursue my education. He wasn’t thrilled, but he understood and supported my decision.
I started my nursing school journey when my son was only four months old at a local community college. My partner and I would meet in the parking lot after his work, and we’d exchange our little boy. He waited during my break because my son needed to be nursed every few hours. So, in a quiet school hallway, I’d nurse him and then head back to my chemistry lab.

Getting Ready for Your First Day of Nursing School
My son joined me for daytime advisor meetings, nursing school interviews, study sessions, and more. His name is Oliver, and he’s always been by my side.
As he’s grown older, especially with the pandemic, we’ve entered a new phase, like many others. For example, I’ve become quite skilled at typing with one hand because I never pass up a cuddle opportunity. I’ll be honest, some days are really tough. We don’t have much external help, and even if we did, the pandemic has made things difficult. Thankfully, I have a supportive and helpful partner. We’re a great team, and I’m truly grateful for that. Still, we get tired, burnt out, and we need breaks. And that’s perfectly okay.
So, to all the moms and everyone else, find your “why” and let it push you forward. Take breaks when needed, and as a wise fish once said, “just keep swimming.”
