Learning Mode vs Protection Mode as a Nurse

Learning Mode vs Protection Mode as a Nurse

As a Registered Nurse and Wellness Coach, I was introduced to the concepts of Learning Mode and Protection Mode during my wellness coaching training. These terms were new to me, and I found them quite interesting.

Learning Mode

The idea behind Learning Mode is to examine how we respond to various situations. When we adopt Learning Mode during challenging events or crises, we approach the situation with curiosity and without judgment. This allows us to take a positive and supportive stance.

Protection Mode

Protection Mode, on the other hand, stems from a mindset of judgment and defensiveness. In this mode, we tend to prioritize being right and safeguarding our ego, emotions, and sense of control. Our bodies may become tense, and we experience heightened emotional stress.

While there are instances where activating the fight or flight response is necessary, such as when we are in danger, most of the situations we encounter can actually serve as opportunities for learning rather than immediate reactions to crises.

Opportunity for Reflection

For instance, a few weeks ago, after a busy 12-hour nursing shift, I noticed symptoms indicating a potential Urinary Tract issue. I had low urine output and experienced a burning sensation while urinating. Reflecting on this, I realized I hadn’t consumed enough water during the shift and had taken only one bathroom break.

Initially, I was inclined to blame the hospital policy for not permitting beverages at the nurse’s station. I wanted to criticize the system for neglecting the staff’s basic needs.

Exploration

However, I decided to investigate OSHA policies and discovered that they don’t explicitly forbid having beverages in covered containers at nursing stations. What OSHA does emphasize is avoiding food or beverages in areas where they could come into contact with blood or hazardous waste.

I realized that my initial reaction was driven by protection mode. Stepping back and considering the situation from a learning mode perspective, I took responsibility for not hydrating myself properly and neglecting bathroom breaks.

This experience led me to further examine policies. I wondered if changes could be made to allow easier access to covered beverages like water at nursing stations. I acknowledged the potential for change. To explore this, I created a simple survey on Survey Monkey to gather opinions on water availability at nursing stations. You can participate in the survey here: [Survey Link](https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TNDWHPX)

My plan involves collecting data from at least 100 responses, as well as policies from my institution and OSHA. This approach allows me to address my institution and explore the possibility of change. While this project began with a protective mindset, embracing a learning mode has led to positive developments.

Nursing Diagnosis Guide

When facing a crisis on your unit or dealing with a challenging patient, it’s valuable to step back and consider the lessons inherent in the situation.

– Evaluate Your Attitude: Protection or Learning
– Identify steps or questions to shift from protection mode to learning mode.
– Observe how your body reacts in these modes. Do you feel tense or calm?
– Approach situations with curiosity: Explore options, potential for change, and your capacity to make a difference.

As you become more aware of your reactions and adopt a learning mode perspective, you’ll find that you gain better control over negativity, judgment, and stress. The positive change you experience will be rewarding.
