Self-Assessment

Self-awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self-assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self-leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection as directed below.

Self-Assessment Reflection

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

In a 1,000-1,250 word reflective essay, address the following:

  1. Provide a rationale and brief summary for selecting each self-assessment. Summarize the results you obtained on each assessment.
  2. Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care and explain what appeals to you about that style.

Select one theory and leadership style, different from your own, and explain how they each support a professional nurse leader or individual in nursing leadership. Consider how the theory shapes the nurse leader in such things as collaboration, conflict resolution, decision making, and negotiation.

Summary of Self-Assessment

Establishing and nurturing relationships holds paramount importance in both social and professional contexts and is contingent on one’s psychological skills. This drove my choice to undergo a psychological assessment. After conducting this assessment, I received a score of 64 for emotional identification, perception, and expression. I was also pleased with my score of 74 on the emotional management scale. These results suggest that I possess fundamental skills in identifying, perceiving, and expressing emotions, both in myself and others. However, there are areas in which I can improve, particularly in interacting and communicating with others. While recognizing people’s moods and emotions is crucial, enhancing my interaction skills would enable me to better assist individuals dealing with emotional distress and frustrations. Furthermore, leaders who effectively manage their emotions can handle complex issues that may arise during their leadership roles (Hao & Yazdanifard, 2015).

The second assessment I undertook was a personality assessment, which covered various aspects such as energy, nature, mind, tactic, and identity. This assessment was particularly important for stress management in nursing leadership practices, making it an essential part of this self-assessment. The highest score was achieved in the “nature” category, indicating that I can effectively manage situations, make decisions, and cope with emotions. I tend to be observant and think critically before making decisions. In terms of “mind,” the results showed that I am 54% introverted and 44% extroverted, a representation that aligns with my personality. However, I was surprised to discover that I scored 68% in the “judgmental” aspect, which I initially found hard to believe. Nevertheless, these assessment results provide valuable insights into my weaknesses, allowing me to work on improving and developing effective leadership qualities.

The third assessment focused on learning styles, which are essential for discerning prevailing situations and offering timely solutions as a leader. This assessment centered on visual, aural, reading, writing, and kinesthetic skills. The highest score was achieved in the visual category (6), while the lowest score was in the kinesthetic category. The VARK profile analysis revolved around different learning styles, with some individuals preferring a practical approach to learning while others favor theoretical methods. As a leader, collaborating with other experienced leaders has positively influenced the development of my leadership skills (Hao & Yazdanifard, 2015).

Leadership Style

My care philosophy revolves around using my influence in a positive manner to assist others. One leadership style that aligns closely with this philosophy is transformational leadership. This style is rooted in a leader’s ability to empower their team and collaborate with them to achieve set goals and objectives. As a nurse leader, transformational leadership appeals to me because it allows me to transform the way my team operates (Reid & Dold, 2017). This transformation occurs through my influence, which encourages them to adopt my care philosophy for the betterment of patient health.

Incorporating Elements

Transformational leadership encompasses several elements that can be integrated into my practice. In my nursing leadership role, I would encourage individualized consideration for team members, enabling them to align their philosophies with mine. Additionally, I would provide inspirational motivation to all team members to enhance the patient experience at our facility (Khoshhal & Guraya, 2016). Through transformational leadership, team members can critically examine aspects of care to deliver positive experiences for patients.

Areas for Improvement

Despite possessing admirable leadership skills as indicated by the assessment results, there are areas that require improvement. The assessment results pointed out that I tend to be judgmental, which is not an ideal trait for a leader. Therefore, I need to learn to appreciate people’s values and embrace diversity. Changing my attitudes toward diversity will help me overcome the issue of being judgmental and equip me to be a better leader (Hiller, Novelli, & Ponnapalli, 2016; Hassanzadeh, Silong, Asmuni & Wahat, 2015). I will also work with other leaders to learn from their experiences in handling stressful and challenging situations. This will help me address the issue of emotional influence on decision-making, which was identified as a significant drawback in the assessment results. Lastly, I will focus on improving my interpersonal and socialization skills, ultimately becoming a more courageous leader capable of interacting with others without fear. Leadership is fundamentally about collaboration, which necessitates both courage and strong socialization skills.

Conclusion

The leadership assessment results affirm that I possess valuable leadership skills. I am observant, think critically when making decisions, and can easily understand people’s emotions, allowing me to adapt my approach to individuals. However, I need to address my tendencies to be judgmental and introverted, as these are the primary weaknesses that need improvement to become a more effective leader.
