While researching the role of nurses with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, I came across numerous articles comparing DNP-prepared nurses to those with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. Many of these articles suggested that employers preferred MSN-prepared nurses because they didn’t fully comprehend the role of DNP-prepared nurses. However, I eventually found an article that described DNP-prepared nurses as individuals possessing the skills and competencies to lead and drive change within the healthcare system (Walker & Polancich, 2015).

The American Association of Colleges of Nurses (AACN) defined DNP-prepared nurses as leaders in nursing practice, capable of enhancing patient outcomes and applying research to practical settings (AACN, 2022). A DNP nurse is expected to be a change leader through their influence on patient outcomes and research. This degree distinguishes itself by enabling DNP nurses to create change through policy and take on leadership roles.

My motivation to become a DNP-prepared nurse sprang from a particularly challenging shift in the emergency room. I wasn’t weary from the job itself, but rather from witnessing how patients were treated differently based on factors such as race and social determinants of health. Patients were frequently judged by their appearance and assumptions about their economic background and housing situation. One night, this deeply upset me, and I realized I had to take action. The following week, I enrolled in school, driven by the belief that I could and would make a difference. I believe I can address an organization’s needs by working to combat inequality. This can be as straightforward as treating all patients with kindness and demonstrating that their visit is as important to me as it is to them.
