Stories from a Person Who’s Been a Patient and Wants to Be a Nurse

Most of us have had experiences with healthcare. We get sick, injured, see loved ones face illnesses, welcome new family members, and sadly say goodbye to others. It’s all part of being human. I’ve had my share of these moments. But it wasn’t until I started working in healthcare that I truly realized how important these moments were.

In 2016, I had a major surgery. I needed spinal fusion to fix my severe scoliosis. This was my first time as a patient, and it made me realize I wanted to be a nurse. I saw how caring nurses were as they turned me in bed and comforted me when I was nervous. Pediatric and orthopedic nurses became my heroes.

How to Remember Important Information in Nursing School

Jump to 2020, a year filled with all sorts of events. I gained more respect for nurses in women’s health after a breast cancer scare and for those in pre-, intra-, and post-surgery care after my breast mass removal surgery. Despite the tough situations, the nurses stayed calm and kind.

2020 was also the year I decided to take better care of my mental health. I started taking medication and talking to a therapist. My healthcare team showed me that mental health is just as important as physical health.

That year, I began a journey to get an official diagnosis for my chronic condition called dysautonomia. It’s frustrating when doctors don’t take your symptoms seriously. As someone who wants to be a nurse, I learned how crucial it is to really listen to patients, even on tiring days.

Why am I sharing all this? I know, it might not seem like the happiest topic. But I want to show how being on the patient’s side has impacted my journey to becoming a nurse. I’ve seen both good and bad sides of healthcare as a patient, and I know what patients hope for in their healthcare team. There were times I doubted if I could be a good nurse due to my health struggles. But through this journey, I’ve learned that these tough moments are shaping me into a caring and understanding nurse.

I’m sharing this so that even if you haven’t been a patient, you can understand your patients better in the future. Support them in the good times and the bad, and truly listen to them. And to those who have been patients and understand what I’m saying, remember that your challenges don’t make you any less of an amazing healthcare worker (something I remind myself of daily)!

You have the power to make a big impact, even if you don’t realize it.

P.S. A big thank you to all the healthcare workers out there! You might not fully grasp how much you mean to your patients. We see you, appreciate you, and are cheering you on.
