During the previous semester, our class was introduced to the Shadow Health Digital Clinical Experience (SHDCE). It wasn’t just a replacement for clinicals but also a valuable learning tool. The change was embraced by all of us, especially since three of our classes were integrated into the software. Initially, we had our doubts, thinking it might be another form of busy work. However, we soon discovered its benefits during our first experiences with maternity, pharmacology, and didactics lectures.

Students engage in a lifelike simulation where they document, assess, administer medications, and communicate with patients about specific medication actions and side effects. This simulation tests attention to detail and knowledge about particular medications.

I was able to follow the guided prompts to elicit pertinent information needed to develop a patient specific plan of care.

If confidence is your issue, try practicing a focus assessment. Maybe that will boost your confidence in asking patients the appropriate questions. Remember, we are accountable for our education.
