The Biden administration has declared that they will provide extra money for five programs that help develop the nursing workforce. The government will invest $100 million to train new nurses and improve the skills of existing ones.
The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) has introduced five funding packages to support programs that aim to increase the number of nurses in the U.S. This is important because there is currently not enough nurses available. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra stated, “Nurses are very important for our nation’s healthcare system. Now more than ever, we need to invest more in nurses who take care of communities all over the country.”
The American Nurses Association (ANA) appreciated the investment, saying it’s much-needed to address a long-standing national issue.

Registered Nurse Pathways
HRSA gave $8.7 million for the NEPQR-PRNP program. This program helps licensed practical nurses and licensed vocational nurses become registered nurses (RNs).
Nine grantees got funding from this program. Seven of them are colleges and universities:

Advanced Nursing Education Workforce
The ANEW program received $34.8 million in this round of grants. It wants to increase the number of primary care nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and certified nurse midwives who can provide primary care services, mental health care, substance misuse care, and maternal healthcare.
Fifty-six grantees will get part of the ANEW program grant. They will receive between $500,000 and $650,000.
Except for one, all the grantees are colleges and universities from 31 different states.
Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship Program
HRSA provided $30 million to the ANE-NPRF program. This program helps increase the number of advanced practice nurses in primary care by supporting residency and fellowship training.
Forty-five grantees will get funding from this program. They will receive between $500,000 and $700,000. These grantees include higher education institutions, health systems, healthcare centers, and hospitals.
Nurse Faculty Loans
The Nurse Faculty Loan Program got $26.5 million in this round of funding. This program gives loans that can be forgiven to nurses who go back to school for a graduate degree. If these nurses work at a public college or university for four years, 85% of the loans will be forgiven.
Eighty-eight colleges and universities received funding from this program. The awards range from $27,000 for the University of Massachusetts medical school to over $3.3 million for Samford University in Alabama.

HRSA granted $2.3 million to the NAT program. This program wants to increase the number of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and provide anesthesia services to underserved communities.
