Top 10 Tips for Studying for the NCLEX

Top 10 Tips for Studying for the NCLEX

with the Help of Saunders Comprehensive Review
Getting ready for the NCLEX exam can feel overwhelming. One of the biggest challenges is figuring out where to begin, given that the NCLEX covers all the content you’ve learned throughout nursing school. An incredibly helpful resource I discovered to tackle this challenge is the Saunders Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination book. This review book was a key tool that contributed to my success in passing the NCLEX. Here are my top 10 study tips for preparing for the NCLEX while using this review book!

1. Assess What You Need to Review: Before creating your study plan, assess the areas/topics you need to review. Use the pre-test from the Evolve online resource to evaluate yourself.

2. Use the Evolve Online Resource: Access the Evolve online resource using the code in your book. Take the pre-test under “Exam review” → “Assessments” → “Pre-test”. The results will guide your review and help structure your study plan.

3. Customize Your Study Plan: Evolve will suggest a study plan, but feel free to customize it. Print a blank calendar and incorporate the study plan from Evolve, adjusting based on your needs.

4. Start Early: Begin studying as early as possible, ideally up to 30 days before your test. Create a visual study calendar to manage your time effectively.

5. Create a Study Binder: Use a three-ring binder or notebook to organize handwritten notes for easy reference.

6. Read Chapters Twice: When reviewing a chapter, read or skim through it at least twice. First, skim without taking notes. Then focus on bolded, boxed, visual, or triangle-marked content during the second read.

7. Answer Practice Questions: After each chapter, answer the practice questions simulating the actual NCLEX format. Review rationales for answers.

8. Use Evolve for More Practice: Utilize the Evolve resource for additional NCLEX-style questions. Customize your practice by choosing categories and modes (study or exam).

9. Take Comprehensive Tests: After reviewing chapters or focusing on specific topics, take the comprehensive test at the back of the review book or complete the Post-test on Evolve.

10. Review Medications and Test Strategies: Study the U.S. Top 100 Prescription Medications list in the book’s final pages. Read the Test-taking Strategies chapter in Unit I, especially if you struggle with test anxiety.

How to Get Ready for the NCLEX in One Month!

Remember to listen to your mind and body, taking breaks when necessary. While preparing thoroughly is important, practicing self-care is equally vital. Celebrate your nursing school achievements and have confidence in your skills as you prepare for the NCLEX. You’ve come this far for a reason – you’ve got this! Good luck!
