Nursing school can make you feel overwhelmed with all the information you need to remember. Sometimes, it might seem impossible to memorize things like muscle details, symptoms of health conditions, or medication effects. Our brains often need extra help to remember these nursing topics. I’ve found that using memory aids and tricks called mnemonics makes it easier for me to remember important things. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. When I want to remember different parts of a patient’s health history assessment, I use the word SAMPLE:
– S stands for Symptoms
– A stands for Allergies
– M stands for Medications
– P stands for Past Medical History
– L stands for Last Oral Intake
– E stands for Events leading to illness or injury
2. To remember emergency medications, I use the word LEAN:
– L stands for Lidocaine HCL
– E stands for Epinephrine
– A stands for Atropine Sulfate
– N stands for Naloxone (Narcan)
3. For recalling signs and symptoms of hypo/hyperglycemia, I use these phrases:
– “Cold and clammy need some candy” for Hypoglycemia
– “High and dry, sugar high” for Hyperglycemia
