In today’s rapidly changing healthcare system, the decisions made in the world of politics have a big impact on how healthcare is provided, the healthcare professionals, and the people they take care of. In this course, students look closely at how policies are created and how they affect things like the cost, quality, and access to healthcare. Students also study how important it is to bring healthcare problems to the attention of government at the federal and state levels. They explore how the government responds through making laws and rules, and they figure out ways to support positive changes in how programs and policies are created, put into action, and assessed. The course also looks at health issues on a global scale and how they influence a nurse’s role as an advocate. Using nursing informatics is crucial to giving care that’s both effective and efficient. In this course, students explore nursing informatics as a skill that nurses need and as a specialized field in nursing. They look at what nurse informaticists do in today’s healthcare practices, including how they gather, get access to, and use health information and knowledge, and how they put clinical systems into action. During this course, students learn how informatics is used to enhance advanced nursing practice and improve healthcare results in different settings, including organizations, public health, and for individuals.

NURS 6052 – Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice (5 credits)

Nurses make sure they provide safe, top-notch, and cost-effective care to patients by relying on proven and tested information. This course gives students the chance to learn more about evidence-based practice (EBP) and how it connects with research and efforts to improve quality. Students will figure out how to use databases to find reliable information and use their understanding of research methods to carefully assess the things they read. They’ll also explore ways to improve how they put different pieces of information together and decide if changes are needed in how they work, based on a collection of evidence. By looking into how to put things into action, check how they’re working, and share what they’ve learned, students will dive into the details of leading and guiding changes in an organization to make nursing practice better.

NURS 6053 – Interprofessional Organizational and Systems Leadership (5 credits)

In this course, students will learn how to be leaders who can make changes in nursing and help organizations deal with the fast-changing world of healthcare. They will learn how to use leadership skills that are based on theories to build the right kind of workplace culture that leads to better results for patients. Students will also find out about strategies that are supported by evidence to create workplaces where nurses feel good and can work together well with other healthcare professionals.

Writing is something that takes a few steps. In this course, students go through the writing process by working on different activities and essays. This course helps students get better at writing with confidence and purpose, both in their schoolwork and at work. They learn the basics of writing, like who they’re writing for, why they’re writing, and how they should write, and they practice writing in different styles, tones, and points of view. They write in different ways, like telling their own stories, writing professionally, using sources, and reflecting on their writing. Students use what they’ve experienced in their lives, jobs, and school to think about and respond to different writing prompts. They use quotes, summaries, and rewording to back up what they say. They do a series of assignments that go from writing about their own experiences to writing a Career Narrative Essay that uses sources. This helps them learn how to write correctly in personal, professional, and academic settings.

ENGL 2002 – Professional Writing for Successful Communication* (5 credits)

Writing that is clear and convincing is a really important skill for professionals. In this course, students learn the basic principles of written communication in a professional environment. They discover why it’s important to know who they’re writing to and why, and they also learn about choices like how to deliver the message, when to send it, and what words to use. Students look at examples of professional writing, like business letters, resumes, brief memos, newsletters, and proposals, among other things. They use what they’ve learned in the course to do different assignments that help them get better at essential writing skills, like using correct grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, style, citing sources, and choosing the right words.

Exploring popular culture helps us understand the values and beliefs of today’s society. In this course, students examine how modern media and popular culture impact art and our thoughts. In their final project, students showcase their learning by comparing and contrasting how different types of media discuss particular topics. They also learn to recognize the social, political, and economic elements that appear in artistic and creative expressions found in popular culture. In this course, students explore important themes of the humanities through various forms of art. They look at how the arts are connected and get a broad introduction to the ideas and practices behind different art forms like painting, photography, sculpture, literature, and architecture. Students will be engaged in class discussions, do short exercises, and write brief essays. But the main project in this course is a long-term research project about a particular form of art. This course is an introduction to the scientific study of human behavior, which includes what people do and how they think and feel on the inside. In this course, students get to think deeply about the world we live in and their own experiences, using a variety of old and new ideas. This course is a study of human anatomy and physiology, which is the structure and function of bodily systems. Students in the course extend from an analysis of cellular processes and tissue structures to the 11 major systems of the human body. Students focus specifically on the regulatory functions of the body that maintain homeostasis and how disruptions in homeostasis may result in injury and/or disease. This course is designed for a general education undergraduate audience.

In this course, students build a strong base in statistical methods and learn how to carefully analyze data sets.
