Students delve into significant issues and trends in modern nursing and healthcare, considering the impact of factors like economics, ethics, laws, politics, and professional values. Through weekly discussions and assignments, they share personal experiences related to current nursing topics, such as the nursing shortage, workforce challenges, healthcare financing, professional organizations, and diversity. They are encouraged to analyze and suggest solutions to these nursing issues, both in a broader context and within their own workplaces. Additionally, students reflect on how Walden’s commitment to social change will influence their future nursing practice as scholar-practitioners. Since this is the initial nursing course in the RN/BSN program, students also learn how to utilize Walden University’s resources to improve their writing skills and become familiar with the tools necessary for success at Walden.

NURS 3151 – Foundations of Nursing Research (5 credits)

Nurses need to grasp research to play an active role in providing evidence-based nursing care. In this course, students acquire the fundamental aspects of the research process, hone their information-literacy skills, and gain insight into ethical research. They delve into every phase of the research process and conduct a thorough evaluation of both quantitative and qualitative research that relates to their nursing practice. Moreover, students are equipped with the means to assess nurse-specific measures and clinical practice guidelines.

NURS 4211 – Role of the Nurse Leader in Population Health (5 credits)

In this course, students put into action the theories and ideas from nursing and public health sciences to evaluate health conditions, prevent and manage diseases, and enhance the well-being of communities by collaborating with families, groups, neighborhoods, and healthcare systems. Students use a systems approach, employing epidemiological and community assessment methods to scrutinize at-risk populations, health promotion, and various prevention levels, with a special focus on culturally diverse and vulnerable groups. They delve into significant health issues at the local, state, and national levels, encompassing communicable diseases, chronic ailments, environmental and workplace health, bioterrorism, emergency preparedness, and response. Practical experiences expose them to population-based health promotion, where they collaborate with interdisciplinary public health partners in a local community. (For reference, 1 credit of practicum equals 72 clock hours of student practice experience.)

NURS 4006 – Topics in Clinical Nursing (5 credits)

Nurses today, to make a difference in the healthcare system, need to arm themselves with the skills and knowledge to lead in challenging, ever-changing times. Quality Improvement science offers a toolbox of useful methods and approaches, and most nurse leaders are already using them. Nurses are expected to be leaders who understand quality improvement. In this course, students work on gaining these skills by tackling real problems in their work and finding solutions that are based on evidence. They also learn how to build strong teams, improve their communication and cooperation with others, use data effectively to measure progress and solve problems, turn everyday work problems into long-term strategies for their organization’s growth, and find ways to manage changes within the organization. Students put these course ideas into action through real-life situations. During this hands-on experience, students learn from experienced nurses about how to apply quality improvement methods in practice. NURS 6050 – Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health (5 credits)

In today’s rapidly changing healthcare system, the decisions made in the world of politics have a big impact on how healthcare is provided, the healthcare professionals, and the people they take care of. In this course, students look closely at how policies are created and how they affect things like the cost, quality, and access to healthcare. Students also study how important it is to bring healthcare problems to the attention of government at the federal and state levels. They explore how the government responds through making laws and rules, and they figure out ways to support positive changes in how programs and policies are created, put into action, and assessed. The course also looks at health issues on a global scale and how they influence a nurse’s role as an advocate. Through discussions, thinking about what they’ve learned, real-life examples, and using professional communication skills as tools in the world of politics, students show how they can use policy-making to improve how they practice nursing and benefit individuals and communities.

NURS 6052 – Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice (5 credits)

In this course, students will learn how to be leaders who can make changes in nursing and help organizations deal with the fast-changing world of healthcare. They will learn how to use leadership skills that are based on theories to build the right kind of workplace culture that leads to better results for patients. Students will also find out about strategies that are supported by evidence to create workplaces where nurses feel good and can work together well with other healthcare professionals.

General Education Courses Available

Courses are available at Walden for those RN-Entry students who have not completed the minimum undergraduate credits of general education courses required for admission to the master’s program.  Students who choose to complete general education courses at Walden are admitted provisionally to the RN-Entry Track of the MSN program.

Note: Students must earn a “C” or better in each course and maintain a GPA of 3.0
