Here’s why: A few years ago, I got the chance to go on a medical trip to Ghana in West Africa. During this trip, I got to practice hands-on skills and also watch and learn from healthcare professionals like nurses, doctors, and eye doctors.
For a pre-nursing student like me, getting practical experience is really helpful. It lets you practice on real patients, learn how to talk to them in a caring way, and learn other skills that you can’t practice in a classroom. At first, I was nervous about working with real patients because I’d never done it before. But we were always with licensed healthcare professionals who could help and answer our questions.

It taught me to be more humble and grateful, to give back to the community, to see life beyond what I’m used to, and most importantly, it showed me how much I love helping others. There’s something special about making others smile and giving back.
Coming back from this trip, I felt more open-minded and excited to become the best nurse I can be, not just for myself, but for others too! I encourage all of you to explore the world and see healthcare from a new angle. I promise you, it changes how you see life and makes you a better person overall. If you can feel fulfilled and excited like I did, why wouldn’t you want to try it?
