Preparing for the NCLEX
My first step was making a calendar to help me stay organized while studying for the NCLEX. I set aside around 1-2 months to study. I printed out a blank calendar and divided the topics from the Saunders Comprehensive Review textbook. This book was my main resource for studying. Using my HESI exam results from school, I focused more time on the subjects I struggled with. (By the way, the HESI scoring reports were useful!)
When I started studying, I would begin by reading the content at the beginning of each section in the Saunders book. Then I’d answer the questions at the end of that section. I suggest reading the explanations even if you got the question right, as understanding the reasoning for each option is important. A few days before my NCLEX, I did the comprehensive review questions and used the code from the textbook to practice more on the Elsevier website!
Tip: I used sticky notes to mark questions I got wrong in each section. Once I went through all the content, I’d go back and redo those questions to make sure I truly grasped the material and could answer correctly. It’s not just about memorization, but understanding. Once you get the reasoning, the concepts start making more sense!
Registration Process
In Canada, your school needs to confirm you’re eligible to take the NCLEX. Then, you’d register with the nursing governing board in your province (like CNO). In Ontario, you need to pass a Jurisprudence exam (policy exam) before becoming a registered nurse (RN). After passing the NCLEX, you pay the licensing fee before registering with your college!
Job Search
Don’t forget to update your resume before applying for jobs! Include your practicum experiences and recent work. Dress well and arrive early for interviews. Be ready for common questions and have examples of scenarios prepared. Depending on the type of unit or interview, you might get scenario-based questions like:
Can you describe a time when you _____.
How would you handle a situation where a person has _____?
Always ask questions at the end of your interview. Lastly, believe in your answers and your interview skills!
