Staying Motivated while Pursuing a BSN Degree
When I was younger, I often struggled to keep up with my schoolwork. I felt sad about this, but then I realized I needed to change my mindset and become a more positive and energetic person. Nursing school can be overwhelming, but having a positive outlook on your journey to become a registered nurse can help you succeed. Here are some things I do each term to stay motivated and positive as I work towards my BSN degree!

SET GOALS
I personally like to set “term goals.” My school term is ten weeks long, and there are many tasks to complete during this time. You can adjust your goals based on how long your semester or quarter is. Breaking goals into smaller pieces for the term makes achieving them more exciting. For instance, this term during my Public Health rotation, one of my main goals is to get an average A on all my exams. Another goal might be to successfully administer at least two IVs during clinical. Celebrating these small goals is the best way to stay motivated (which leads to my next point).
CELEBRATE THE SMALL WINS
If you’re like me, getting into nursing school was a big accomplishment. You’re still in the program and doing great! It’s important to celebrate your small achievements. Whether it’s passing an exam, mastering your check-offs, or having a successful day in clinicals—go ahead and celebrate! Treat yourself and your nursing friends to a meal, a drink, or a fun outing (I love going to Disneyland after each term).
TAKE BREAKS
Taking breaks is essential for studying and maintaining motivation. Your brain can only absorb so much information, and sometimes a break is necessary. I use the Pomodoro Technique in my study sessions. This technique can be applied beyond school and helps improve productivity. The Pomodoro Technique involves these steps:
Decide on the task.
Set the Pomodoro timer (usually 25 minutes).
Work on the task.
When the timer rings, take a short break (3-5 minutes) and make a checkmark on paper.
If you have less than four checkmarks, take a short break, then repeat steps 2-4.
After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15-30 minutes), reset your checkmark count, then start again.

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
If you remember only one thing from this post, remember this: positive affirmations have helped me navigate tough situations in nursing school. Speaking positively about your goals and aspirations can give you hope. For instance, I tell myself affirmations like “I will become a Labor & Delivery Nurse,” “I am capable of succeeding in nursing school,” and “I can achieve anything I set my mind to.” Any statement that affirms who you are and what you can do works. I suggest writing these affirmations on sticky notes or on your mirror, somewhere you’ll see them daily as you work toward your dreams.
