Tanner Bailey Shadow Health Assessment

Tanner Bailey Shadow Health Assessment

Tanner Bailey Shadow Health AssessmentTanner Bailey, a 30-year-old transgender man, is a vibrant individual working as a theatre director in a specialized company that celebrates queer narratives. Outside of his professional life, Tanner finds joy in physical activity and indulges in classic cinema. He takes proactive steps to ensure his well-being and happiness, embodying resilience and determination in the face of societal challenges.

Tanner’s presence is felt across various scenarios in both Advanced Pharmacology and Community Health DCEs, shedding light on the everyday struggles encountered by transgender individuals. These simulations poignantly illustrate the pervasive bias and discrimination faced by trans people in healthcare and employment settings. Research by Sherman et al. (2021) underscores the adverse impact of such bias, leading to significant health disparities and barriers to accessing appropriate care.

In the Advanced Diagnostics DCE, Tanner’s case presents a collaborative effort between students and Preceptor Diana to formulate a medical diagnosis based on his clinic visit. By featuring Tanner in multiple simulation experiences, Shadow Health aims to broaden nursing students’ exposure to transgender patients, a demographic often overlooked in traditional clinical settings.

In the development of the Community Health DCE, Shadow Health partnered with Trans Equity Consulting, drawing upon their expertise to authentically portray Tanner’s narrative and experiences within the simulated environment of Shadowville.

Similar to Lupe’s case, Tanner’s simulation incorporates a Rapport Building activity, emphasizing the importance of establishing trust and rapport with transgender clients during healthcare interactions. Given the prevalence of negative experiences within the healthcare system, with studies indicating that a quarter of transgender patients delay seeking care due to fear of mistreatment, this aspect of the simulation holds significant educational value.

Moreover, Tanner’s simulation prompts students to consider his preferences regarding terminology related to his anatomy, highlighting the importance of respectful and inclusive language in healthcare communication. This comprehensive approach fosters a deeper understanding of the unique needs and experiences of transgender patients.

Additionally, recent research published in Nurse Educator explores the impact of a virtual patient simulation focused on caring for a transgender adult on nursing students’ attitudes and beliefs towards transgender individuals. The findings underscore the efficacy of experiential learning in cultivating cultural competence and sensitivity among nursing students, emphasizing the importance of hands-on training in addressing the diverse healthcare needs of transgender patients.

Tanner Bailey Shadow Health Assessment

Tanner Bailey is a 30-year-old man who used to be a woman. He works as a director at a theatre company that focuses on stories about LGBTQ+ people. In his free time, he enjoys exercising and watching old movies. Tanner takes charge of making sure he stays healthy and happy. You’ll see Tanner in different situations in Advanced Pharmacology and Community Health DCEs. These cases show how hard life can be for transgender people because of unfair treatment, like being treated badly by doctors and employers.

If doctors and others treat transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people unfairly, they might not get the right healthcare, which can make them sicker (Sherman et al., 2021). Tanner also shows up in the Advanced Diagnostics DCE. Here, students work with someone called Preceptor Diana to figure out what might be wrong with Tanner when he visits the clinic. By showing Tanner in different situations, nursing students get more chances to work with a transgender patient, which might not happen in regular training.

For the Community Health DCE, Shadow Health got help from Trans Equity Consulting, the same group that helped with Lupe’s case. With their advice, the people at Shadow Health made sure Tanner’s story was real and true to life in Shadowville.

Like Lupe, Tanner’s simulation also has an activity about building a good relationship. The consultants said it’s really important to connect well with a transgender client during a visit. These people often have bad experiences with doctors—studies show that 25% of transgender patients put off going to the doctor because they’re scared of being treated badly. Besides asking about Tanner’s name and which pronouns he likes, students will also learn what words Tanner prefers for talking about his body (he likes “chest” instead of “breast”), and they’ll talk about how Tanner wants the physical exam to be done before they start.

Also, Shadow Health recently did a study, talked about in Nurse Educator, to see how a virtual patient simulation about caring for a transgender adult affects nursing students’ thoughts and feelings about transgender people. The study shows that hands-on learning in nursing is a good way to teach nurses how to be understanding and respectful when they’re helping transgender patients.

Tanner Bailey Shadow Health Assessment

Tanner Bailey is a 30-year-old transgender man who works as a theatre director at a queer theatre company. In his spare time, he loves working out and watching old movies. He is proactive about his health and happiness. Tanner appears in two different simulations in Advanced Pharmacology and Community Health DCEs, where cases highlight the difficulties trans people face on a daily basis due to unjust bias including regular discrimination in health care and the job sector. Bias against transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people in healthcare can lead to significant health disparities and limited access to appropriate care (Sherman et al., 2021). He also appears in the Advanced Diagnostics DCE where students collaborate with Preceptor Diana to determine a working medical diagnosis from his visit to the clinic. By featuring Tanner in three different simulation experiences, students across nursing education have a higher chance of interacting with a transgender patient, which they may not have the opportunity to in traditional clinicals.

For Tanner’s appearance in the Community Health DCE, Shadow Health worked with Trans Equity Consulting, the same consulting agency referenced for Lupe’s case. With their guidance, Shadow Health’s development teams crafted a whole, authentic representation of Tanner and his experiences in Shadowville.

Similar to Lupe, Tanner’s simulation also includes a Rapport Building activity. According to consultant input, establishing rapport with a trans client is extremely important during a visit. This population has often had negative experiences in the healthcare system—research shows that 25% of trans patients report delaying healthcare-seeking out of fear of mistreatment and discrimination. In addition to asking about pronouns and his preferred name, students will also determine what terms Tanner prefers for referencing his anatomy (he prefers “chest” instead of “breast”); and discussing Tanner’s preferences for physical examination prior to beginning the exam.

Additionally, Shadow Health recently conducted research, published in Nurse Educator, to determine the effect of a virtual patient simulation scenario of caring for a transgender adult on nursing students’ attitudes and beliefs about transgender people. Study findings support experiential learning in nursing as an effective tool in teaching cultural competence and sensitivity when caring for transgender patients.
